About Us

Mission & Purpose

The Violence Prevention Consortium (VPC) is a statewide community driven organization dedicated to the prevention of violence in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities through PRIMARY PREVENTION. Founders launched this grass roots organization in 1993 to focus attention, collaborations, long-term commitment and resources on violence prevention approaches in Hawaii. Today, VPC membership, partnership and support mobilizes over 200 individuals, groups, businesses and public and private agencies for our “Unified Approach to Violence Prevention in Hawaii” collaboration and the Pre-K-12 Violence Prevention Curriculum Initiative (VPCI), emphasizing the need for a fourth “R” in education, READING, ‘RITING, ‘RITHMETIC AND RELATIONSHIPS. VPC and The Awareness Foundation, Inc. (TAFI) merged to form the new TAFI January 2003.

Public-Private Partnership History

Since 1993, individual community members, organizations, church groups, parents, youth, teachers, counselors, members of the House and Senate Women’s Caucus, other legislators, Hawaii Women’s Coalition (HWC), representatives from the Office of the Lt. Governor, the Department of the Attorney General, Department of Education (DOE), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Human Services, sexual assault counseling and prevention education programs, mediation programs, YWCA of Oahu, domestic violence agencies, Keiki Injury Prevention Coalition, the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW), University of Hawaii (UH), National Association of Social workers-Hawaii Chapter, Judiciary, League of Women Voters of Honolulu, physicians, Office of the Mayor-City & County of Honolulu, county prosecutors and police departments participated by lending their time, expertise and critical feedback in the development and continuation of the VPC and the VPCI.

In December 1995, the VPC (formerly the Violence Prevention Coordinating Council) fulfilled the requirements of House Concurrent Resolution 150 HD 1 & Senate Concurrent Resolution 191 HD 1 by submitting a report entitled, The Hawaii School-Based Violence Prevention Plan/Seeds of Peace for Today and Tomorrow. The 80 plus member Violence Prevention Coordinating Council researched and prepared this report for the 1996 Legislature to fulfill the Resolutions’ mandates to prepare a report to address the integration of violence prevention skills and knowledge into all grades of public school as a strategy to reduce physical and sexual violence in our homes, schools and communities. VPC & HSCSW, through funding by DOH produced, Demonstration Project Components for Hawaii School-Based Violence Prevention Curriculum Development & Integration/Seeds of Peace for Today & Tomorrow, in 2001.
