This acronym describes the way to avoid or decrease violence in any situation, as prescribed by the Peace Learning Center in Indiana. Young people nowadays are all about peace; and unfortunately, it actually has to be taught, where it used to come naturally.

Domestic violence is a crime that’s committed in the place children are supposed to feel safe, and those committing it are those that children are supposed to trust. Home should be their safe haven from all the world’s ills, but sadly, it’s the very place where some of the most horrific crimes against children happen.

Teaching children how to get away from the violence and how to avoid it is very important to raising healthy families in the present. Children must be taught not only that violence is wrong, but how to handle it if they are exposed to it and how to avoid committing it.

The Peace Learning Center teaches kids to problem solve and find ways to work things out. It teaches them the importance of being able to depend on one another. Thankfully, there are centers like this all over the US now. It’s a great thing to get a child involved in.

They hold family events, create celebrations, make artwork that has a point to it, offer classes and help those that are violence victims. The outreach is a wonderful tool to expose more and more families to peaceful solutions. Find a Peace Learning Center model in your hometown and get involved. The world’s future depends on it.

When going on vacation to Hawaii the only thing that graces the mind is the fun, the sun, and the adventure! What will you do? What will you see? Where will you go and what will you wear? But the truth is that there are lots of things that can happen especially when someone is away at a distant location. With floods, earthquakes, accidents, and injuries, it’s important to be prepared for any and all of these unlucky events. So what can you do to prepare?

Get Health Insurance: Health insurance is a must these days for but should be even more important to those who are traveling. It is definitely not the most romantic idea when thinking about weekend getaways but it will save lots of heartache and money in the long run. That way if a leg gets broken, a back goes out, or contacts get lost, vacationers can rest assured that they are covered and need not worry about expensive out of pocket costs that may cut their days in paradise short.

If future travelers have no health insurance the best bet is to get online and begin to look for an insurance quote on traveler’s insurance that includes health coverage. Many sites offer this service. After inputting answers to a list of questions the site will generate a price quote so that you can decide on the plan that is right for you. There doesn’t have to be long phone calls or uncomfortable personal interviews; instead, you can find what you need from the privacy of your own home.

So when Hawaii calls and the floral shirts are packed be sure to invest in health insurance. Everyone would love to have a vacation free of accidents and injuries, but in the off chance they do occur, do yourself a favor and be prepared. A few minutes online today could spare you a hurt wallet tomorrow.

It is an employer’s responsibility to maintain a business that is free of harassment. If harassment is occurring in your business unchecked it lowers morale, productivity, and can create expensive legal issues for you. Sexually harassment is illegal, but unfortunately, it still occurs every day in the workplace.

Sexual harassment is actually a broad term and comes in many forms. It is imperative that you educate your employees on what actions constitutes sexual harassment. A sexual advance or conduct that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment that makes any employee uncomfortable is considered sexual harassment. It can be a supervisor, manager, or coworker that has sexually harassed and employee. Jokes, pictures, touching and innuendo can constitute sexual harassment.

Have a very clear sexual harassment policy. It should define sexual harassment. Your policy should state you will not tolerate any sexual harassment in any form. The policy should have a very clear procedure for filing complaints and that every complaint received will be investigated. It should also indicate what disciplinary actions will be taken if the complaint is found to be valid.

Once a year train employees on what to do when they see sexual harassment, or what to do if they are a victim of sexual harassment. Encourage employees to use whatever complaint system that you have in place. Train your managers and supervisors separately. Teach them what sexual harassment is and how to keep an eye out for signs. Also show them how to handle complaints that are made. As an employer you also have to show that you are actively checking for signs of sexual harassment. Monitor your workplace by looking for posters, pictures or anything that could be considered sexual in nature. Talk to your employees about their working environment. Take any complaint of sexual harassment seriously and investigate immediately. If it is valid, your response should be fast and disciplinary actions effective.

Workplace violence is defined as “violence or the threat of violence against workers” involving physical assault, threatening behavior, or verbal abuse related to the workplace, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). These behaviors range from verbal aggressiveness or harassment to murder. There were 521 workplace killings in the United States in 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 420 of them committed by gunfire.

While mass shootings receive a great deal of coverage in the media, such as the shootings at the manufacturing plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico in July 2010 and the gunman who opened fire at the Bay City School Board meeting in December 2010, there are many more violent acts committed by employees. In addition to the harm they cause, violent acts can leave employers liable for damages if they knew an employee was a potential threat to co-workers.

What can an employer do to identify and prevent a potential problem? One way is to search a potential employee’s history of past violence by using a pre-employment background check. By screening applicants, an employer can expose any recorded history of violence or harassment. In addition when employers inform job applicants of their screening process, many prospective employees with background issues with remove themselves from the hiring process.

By using this method to reduce workplace violence, employers also show that they are diligent in finding out if an applicant poses a potential threat to the company or to the public. But employers do need to be careful about crossing the line and being too invasive into a prospective employee’s privacy. According to the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), laws in several states limit the use of arrest and conviction records by prospective employers. These include restricting the use of conviction history in making an employment decision.

With media attention given to reports of suicide and cyber bullying, much of the United States views public schools as dangerous, if not deadly, places. However, this is a misperception based on high-profile cases reported in the media. Few serious violent crimes take place in school relative to home. In fact, very few juvenile homicides take place at school. In contrast, there is evidence of a growing problem with less serious crimes such as bullying and harassment that require a school’s attention.

Juvenile Violence is Decreasing

According to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) national arrest statistics, law enforcement made approximately 581,765 juvenile arrests for violent crimes in 2009, a decline of 15 percent from the year 2000 and a drop of 2.3 percent from 2008. Those under age 18 also are less violent than adults. Juveniles accounted for 14 percent of all arrests for violent crimes in 2009.
Among students aged 12-18, there were about 743,100 non-fatal violent crimes in schools, according Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) figures for the 2008-2009 school year. During that same period, there were 38 school-associated violent deaths in the United States including 15 homicides. This is less than half the reported number of school homicides in 1998. Because of highly publicized homicides in the 1990′s, local school systems across the country implemented tougher policies, and expanded their use of school resource officers and security officers.

Bullying on School Grounds

During the 2007-2008 school year, 32 percent of students reported being bullied on school grounds and four percent reported being cyber bullied (which can occur anywhere) versus just two percent of these same student reporting violent crimes, according to BJS. This same population in 1999 reported bulling at a rate of just 5.1 percent of students.
For schools to remain a relatively safe place for children, administrators need to know what kinds of crimes are most likely to happen and make decisions based in fact.

A recent study by US researchers has found that older adults who adopted a healthy diet were more likely to live longer than those who did not. In a study of 2,500 Americans between the ages of 70 and 79 over a ten year period will report these findings in the January 2011 issue of Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

Healthy Diet Make for a Longer Life
According to the study’s findings, older adults who maintain a diet of mostly fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and little beef had a higher-quality and longer life than their counterparts who had higher intakes of fat and sugar. There are not many studies that have focused on dietary patterns and longevity in the elderly. Since the leading causes of death are shifting to chronic diseases which can be affected by diet, more research is looking at diet. In addition to this change, the world population is also aging. The worldwide population of adults over 65 is expected to reach 973 million in 2030, more than double the same population in 2000.

Saturated Fats and Trans Fats Lead to Higher Mortality
The study divided the research participants into six groups based on what they ate most. After taking various demographics of the participants into account, research showed that participants categorized under the high-fat dairy foods group and the sweets and desserts group had mortality rates 40 percent and 37 percent, respectively, higher than the healthy foods group. Both of these food group with higher mortality rates are higher in saturated fats and trans fats than the healthy foods group.

The project was led by Dr. Amy Anderson and Dr. Nadine Sahyoun, both from the University of Maryland’s Department of Nutrition and Food Science. Grants from the National Institute of Health and National Institute of Aging helped support this research.

Teens are starting to date these days much sooner than they were 10 or even 20 years ago. There is also the introduction of mood-enhancing chemicals in their dating social circle that includes things like alcohol and drugs. When these things become a part of the equation, the teens often experience emotional and physical outbursts that can be harmful to those around them, especially their dates.

Because the dating scene has changed so dramatically, teens need to be aware of potentially harmful situations and understand how they can avoid being caught in compromising situations.

While dating, of course teens want to have fun and experience living a fun youth, but whenever there is potential violence involved, there are some things that they need to be aware of and caution against. They include:

- Alcohol Use
Teenagers should not ride with or be around their dates when they have consumed too much alcohol. Very often when people have consumed too much alcohol, they become violent and act out, usually with the person they’re with. Teens should avoid this by refusing to get in the car if there’s alcohol present or if they detect alcohol on the person’s breath.

- Walk Away
In the dating scene, there are many opportunities for the teenagers to want to appear tough. They may instigate arguments or try and start fights with their dates. In order to avoid harmful situations, the teen should just walk away and refuse to participate in any of the behavior. This action can squelch any chance of problems escalating out of control.

For the teenager, dating should and can be a fun time for them to enjoy as they grow and expand their social circles. Being safe in all situations is the best way for them to be able to do this without bringing harm to themselves and others around them.

School authorities have a very real problem when it comes to school bullies. They are sometimes hard to identify and many times even harder to control. Because the bullying situation in many schools is so rampant, authorities often decide to either ignore the problem or wait until it escalates to a point where they have to implement more aggressive situations.

Taking care of situations where there is a bullying problem often involves several steps where the authorities and the families of those involved work together to find an amenable solution. Some things that can help rectify the problem include:

- Talking with the children involved. This includes the bully(ies) and those who are being bullied. Try to find out the underlying cause of the problem and why such a problem exists. Many times, especially with younger children, simply talking about the issues can help it go away.

- Always involve the parents of the children. This should be done as a first step, proactive solution in order to offset the problem before it gets too far out of hand. This is especially important if parents aren’t aware of any existing situations.

- Implement actionable items that would cause the children to incur consequences for their behavior. This may discourage the bullying behavior while the kids learn that there are consequences for their actions.

- Involve the authorities when dealing with bullies to use as a discouraging method for their behavior. Usually this will alleviate any brewing problems, or at least keep the thought in the children’s minds.

In order for there to be a successful stand against bullying, it requires the efforts and attention of all who are directly involved in the situation. With everyone involved and interested in bringing a resolution to the existing problem, bullying can soon become a problem of their past.

Unfortunately, bullies come in all shapes, forms and ages, but the school-yard bully is perhaps the one that many children fear the most. It’s likely because it is in a school setting and the one thing that most kids want is to fit in and be accepted. Being bullied means that the child has to conform to what the bully wants them to do, and often this is not the best scenario for them to partake in.

Bullying is a very real and aggressive problem that many schools are finding difficult to control and manage. There are many situations that they don’t even know about and circumstances that occur on a daily basis that’s not brought to the school’s administration’s attention.

What does a bully do? What do they look like? Here are five characteristics and traits of a school bully that children should watch for and avoid:

1. Bullies are usually loud and aggressive. They like attention and do things, usually negative things, to get that attention, even if it means shoving and pushing other kids around.

2. Bullies are softies. They may look and act mean, but they’re usually the first ones to cry if they’re challenged.

3. They have very few “friends” They are usually flanked by other kids who are just as equally afraid of them and don’t want to get on their bad side.

4. Be firm but not confrontational. Bullies will respect you if you will be firm and take up for yourself when you need to. They want to instill fear, and if you don’t show any fear, they can’t scare you.

The school-yard bully will likely exist for many years to come. But if the young child knows what to expect and uses some of these tips to help them avoid bad situations, the bully certainly doesn’t have to be a part of their lives in any way.

Learning to defend yourself is something that we teach our children from the time they enter elementary school even until they get to college. We want them to understand how to protect themselves in any situation and also how to avoid getting into any fights or arguments.

As adults, we must also learn to defend ourselves, although it may not always be in the physical sense. Even so, there may be times when it becomes necessary to learn the mechanics of self-defense in case we’re ever confronted with any awkward situations.

Defending yourself is very important for several reasons:

- Never allow someone to physically harm you in any way. Your body is your property and no one is allowed to harm you in any way.

- Protecting yourself physically is important in order to discourage sustained injuries. Once you get hit, especially hit the wrong way, it hurt very badly and for a long time. Protecting and defending your body can help to avoid long-term injuries.

- Defending yourself sends a message to others that they cannot try to harm you. People who want to physically harm others will learn very quickly that they should not bother you.

Self-defense is often viewed as physical fighting, like street-fighting or in organized ways like Karate or Tae Kwon Do. Although these ways are very common ways to defend yourself, the concept of self-defense goes beyond the physical element and goes into ways on being proactive and limiting any potential situations where self-defense must be implemented.

When you defend yourself physically, you usually want to discourage others from harming you before any problems erupt. If you approach the situation from this perspective, you will find that there are very few incidents that you’

re involved in. You will also notice that there are very few people who may be usually confrontational but will not want to bother you or start any conflict.

The common cold is perhaps one of the most annoying illnesses there is, simply because it’s not life-threatening, yet it can linger on and on for weeks and make the person suffer and totally miserable. There is also no cure for the common cold which makes it even more annoying since the person has to simply “wait it out” and make the best of an uncomfortable situation.

The cold is also not necessarily a seasonal illness, since there are summer colds and winter colds, but the symptoms that accompany the cold can make it feel much worse sometimes than it really is. With the aches, pains, fever and congestion that often accompany the cold, finding cures or remedies is likely going to be at the top of the person’s list.

So since there is no cure for the common cold, what are some things that a person can do to avoid catching such an annoying illness? There are several things that a person can do on a daily basis to help, but here are 3 key things that a person can do to avoid the illness. They are:

- Wash your hands often. After physical contact with infected persons, doorknobs or any surface where there is a lot of human traffic.

- Drink water, eat healthily and get plenty of rest. This gives your body the defense it needs in order to fight off the germs that infest the body with the cold virus.

- Spray surfaces with disinfectant in all season and off-season months. This will kill germs quickly and retard their growth.

Living with the common cold can be as short as a week or as long as a month. This can vary from person to person, their environment and their environment.
Public health is a topic that gets a lot of media attention, especially when there is an outbreak of some kind that threatens the overall health and safety of the general population and local communities. There are many types of illness outbreaks that are adequately contained immediately that never becomes public knowledge or that people are made aware of. Most times, this is effective, and sometimes it’s not so effective. When there is an illness that gets out of control and beyond containment, the public has to be made aware of it and what steps to take to avoid further problems.

For the average person who interacts on a daily basis in any public situation, there are things that they can do that will help them avoid certain illnesses and being exposed to anything that can be potentially harmful to their health. This is especially important if the person has a low immune system and is susceptible to catch just about anything that is airborne. This is also true for small babies and the elderly whose immune systems are somewhat weakened, making them liable to catch most anything as well.

- Avoid touching high traffic surfaces like doorknobs, toilet handles and seats and places where there is a lot of hand contact. This is how many germs and bacteria are transferred.

- Cover your mouth and nose in high traffic places, if possible, to reduce your exposure to germs. This includes sports events, medical facilities and even shopping malls. Although this can seem like a put-off for many people, try to be as discreet as possible without offending.

Practicing and using routines that will protect you from contracting illnesses that are common in the public can keep you safe and protected. Certain routines and habits will also help you transfer those over to any situation and implement them whenever health issues are at risk.

The sight of a needle is enough to make a person weakened or faint. Many people have a great fear when it comes to needles and injections and would just prefer to not be bothered with it. However, there are some types of illnesses or medical conditions that warrant the use of needles on a frequent basis, some as often as two to three times a day. When this is the case, there can potentially be an assortment of needles lying around if they are not disposed of properly, in a person’s home or even in their beds.

Hypodermic needles are very sharp and very pointed since their job is to pierce the skin and adequately deliver the medicine in the vial. Used hypodermic needles that have already pierced a person’s body and entered into their skin contain small particles of the person’s skin and blood and any other contaminants that may be present in their system.

Used hypodermic needles are a haven for germs and bacteria, and also a breeding ground for attracting any other airborne contaminants since it is exposed after being used. Properly and safely disposing of used needles is a good habit to develop in order to offset any other medical issues.

- Use a Sharp container to insert the needle after use. This is the clear container with the red top that is used for this.

- Ensure that used needles in their disposed containers get to the right waste facility.

- Immediately handle the needle after using and don’t lay it down somewhere, taking the risk that it will be forgotten.

Facilities like doctor’s offices and individuals who use needles frequently would do well to adopt practices that will help them remove them safely. It is not hard to do, but taking a little extra time to ensure the safe disposal of the needles can make a big difference in a person’s health state.

Our state of health is determined not only by what we eat or drink, but also by how much sleep and rest our bodies get. Studies have shown that people who get seven or more hours of sleep each night are also more likely to not be overweight, stressed or have any other physical ailments that wreak havoc on their bodies.

Many people underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep and think that they can get by with very little, sometimes trying to subsist off of two, three or even four hours at a time. What usually results is a shortened attention span, nervous energy, the inability to focus and making physical mistakes that can potentially be quite harmful.

Proper rest is also the key to an overall state of health since adequate rest helps to equip our bodies with the energy it needs to fight off anything from the common cold to some types of diseases. So how can you get more sleep to get the most benefits?

- Have a set time to retire for the evening. No matter what’s going on, get up and go to bed at the designated time. This gets your body in the habit of sleeping at a certain time and trained to resting at will.

- Take power naps throughout the day, if possible. This can super-charge you for anything else that the day may hold and give you a huge boost of natural energy.

- Don’t do anything stimulating before bedtime, like exercising or drinking caffeine. This can keep your body wired too much to wind down and prepare to go to sleep.

With the proper rest and a good night’s sleep every night, a person has the ability to achieve more and to be more productive. Without it, they are faced with many disadvantages that in the end prove to not be worth the time that they cut into their rest.

Everybody’s heard about social drinking. There is a population out there that advocates having an alcoholic drink or two in social gatherings to maintain that perfect balance. If trends are anything to go by, social smoking could soon be a common phenomenon. As the term implies, social smokers light up only occasionally in a gathering or an event.

The reasoning is that a few cigarettes a week are definitely less harmful than a whole pack or packs every day. While this may seem consistent, there are many compelling reasons why social smoking cannot be dismissed as another harmless practice. The first reason is that the definition of social smoking is subject to a whole range of interpretations; it could mean one cigarette or several packs at one go.

The possibility of social smoking developing into a full-blown habit cannot be ruled out either. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s estimated that 46 million Americans smoke and 70% of them want to stop. Moreover, the human body is not built for smoking tobacco, period. Even one cigarette leaves an imprint on body chemistry and arterial walls. Occasional smoking may not put your chances of getting cancer on par with a serious smoker, but it will definitely be higher than a non-smoker’s.

A worrying fact is that most social smokers are young, and are the targets of marketing campaigns by tobacco companies who don’t want to lose out on this segment. The Anti-Tobacco Bill aims to protect this vulnerable chunk of the population from such campaigns that can increase tobacco usage.

Electronic cigarettes are a good choice if you’re not ready to kick the habit just yet. Apart from being available in a variety of flavors, it also offers the benefits of being tar free. The nicotine is still there though but if you want to retain your social smoker status, an electronic cigarette is a step in the safer direction.

Just about everybody at one time or another has enjoyed eating their favorite greasy hamburger and fries, or slurped on an extra-thick shake to top it all off. This indulgence may be an occasional pleasure for some, or a daily plate for others. While it may have been really good going down, they may later regret that special moment when they find that the extra pounds are hard to take off.

The saying that “you are what you eat” holds true for people in many cases, since whatever we eat or drink is manifested in our skin, hair and bodies overall. Our diet, whether it’s fast-food, high-fat, home-cooked, vegetarian or a little of it all will show up in our state of health and be a positive or negative issue that we have to deal with.

Diets that are high in fat and sugar tend to slow our bodies down since it takes more energy for our bodies to digest these things. These types of diets also tend to cause our bodies to hold on to the fat content in the foods and be very stubborn at releasing them from our bodies.

Diets that are low in fat and higher in proteins and vegetables quickly reward the body with renewed energy and a brighter, clearer skin complexion. This is why people who are on a diet to lose weight are encouraged to eat more vegetables and drink more water to essentially “flush” the toxins from their bodies.

By incorporating healthy habits into your lifestyle, you can develop routines that lean towards good eating and living and that will show up in your physical health. Although it won’t be a magical, with some consistency, it can become a routine part of your life. In time, you’ll certainly be glad that you passed up that burger-and-fry temptation in favor of good, hearty vegetables!

Making a citizen’s arrest is much like “The Andy Griffith Show where Barney would arrest law-breakers and put them in jail. Although Barney was an officer of the law, it was quite comical how he would arrest the people of the town and throw them in jail for sometimes no good reasons. The first thing that Barney would do however, would be to warn the person that he was about to arrest him and they had better get ready!

However, in today’s time, making a citizen’s arrest is slightly different than what it was in Deputy Fife’s day. Although regular citizens can and do make citizen’s arrests, the cause for such a thing cannot be trivial as it once was, and needs to be taken as a serious matter that can carry serious consequences.
A couple of things to keep in mind for a person who decides to act in that capacity should include:

- Having a thorough working knowledge of the general letter of the law. They should at least be clear on what constitutes breaking a law and what is considered a misdemeanor.

- Know the contact information for the local area so that they contact the police immediately. After making the citizen’s arrest, they need to be able to get in touch with the police department right away.

When there is a citizen’s arrest made, the person who does the arresting acts as a law enforcement official in the absent of such an authority and is able to cite and/or make references to the law that the offender is breaking. Also, the person who is making the arrest does not necessarily have to be a citizen of the jurisdiction of the area where the arrest is taking place. Just as long as there is a law being broken and there is someone who catches it, they are able to enforce the governing laws from a citizen’s perspective.

Your child has just started high school, and you are overwhelmed with emotion. It’s hard to believe that your baby is actually in high school, and growing up faster than the speed of light. You’ve probably had several talks with her about your own high school experiences, which has led you to start contemplating about what it will be like when she starts to date. The last thing that will probably enter your mind when thinking about this is violence.

You’d like to think that your child’s dating experience will be as exciting and innocent as yours was. But in this day and age, it may not always be innocent. Violence can show up in unexpected places, including your child’s dating life. There are some things you’ll need to talk with your daughter about before she starts dating so she understands that teen dating abuse can occur, and she should not tolerate it. If she finds herself in a violent relationship, she needs to remove herself from it immediately.

The facts about teen dating abuse are shocking. One in five teens that have been in a serious relationship has reported being hit, slapped, or pushed by a partner. One in three teens has reported that they know a friend who has experienced dating abuse. And one in four teen girls who have been in a relationship has reported that they’ve been pressured to perform sexual activities with their partner.

Of course, dating abuse isn’t always physical. It can be emotional or verbal too. Controlling behavior may also be a factor. With today’s social networks and texting options on cell phones, it’s easier for predators, including your daughter’s boyfriend, to use these tactics to keep her under his control. This kind of behavior is a warning sign that violence can occur too.

As a parent, there are steps you can take to protect your daughter from dating abuse. Talk to your daughter about it so she’s aware that she doesn’t have to be a victim, and can come to you for help. Let her know up front what is not acceptable.

Neighborhood safety watch programs are being set up in communities all over the country to help keep crime rates down. You can set up a neighborhood watch program in your community if you’re experiencing break-ins, theft, or any other similar problems that affect the safety of you and your neighbors, especially the kids. Your local Sheriff’s office can help get you started with their USAonWatch program.

The first thing you’ll want to do is register your safety watch group. You can do this in five easy steps. First, recruit and organize as many of your neighbors as you can. Then schedule a time you all can meet with your local law enforcement agency and set up an appointment. At this meeting, you’ll want to discuss the concerns your group has with your community, and create an action plan. Once your program is set up, you’ll need to schedule regular meetings for training, organizing, and keeping the program up-to-date. You should also create a phone tree to contact each other in cases of emergencies. Then, you’re ready to start taking action.

Your local law enforcement agency can also provide you with publications that will help you set up and maintain your neighborhood safety watch program. You can search the Internet for online publications, but make sure you’re looking at legitimate websites, such as the USAonWatch organization’s homepage. You can also request an Action Pack once you register your group, which contains valuable information on setting up your watch group and holding meetings.

There are several benefits to setting up your neighborhood safety watch program. The most important benefit is that you’ll be in direct partnership with your local law enforcement agency and your neighbors. This will help reduce the crime rate in your neighborhood. You’ll also be creating a more secure community, and be better prepared in emergency situations.

Your neighborhood safety watch program will help your community become united, which will help everyone in more ways than just staying safe. Your program will help improve communication amongst your neighbors, which will make for not only a safer neighborhood, but a friendlier one too.

Violence is a problem wherever it may be found. Occasionally people may decide it is the only way to solve another problem – war springs to mind – but for the most part, society eschews violence, at least in reality. It’s hard to remember this, as entertainment and the media are saturated with violence, but nevertheless, it’s better to solve disagreements with words instead of fists.

Not everyone understands this, which is why there is a police force and why one must watch out – why the world is not always, despite people’s strongest wishes, a safe place. Sometimes people who would not normally be violent are led to violence through other circumstances. Drugs are a prime offender. People may be good and nonviolent, but in desperate times they turn to drugs for some comfort, and then, in the altered state imposed by the drugs, they lash out. Typically, if people on drugs are not hurting others they are hurting themselves.

Alcoholism is an example of a devastating disease, springing from a legal drug, that can tear people apart, which is why it is important to make an alcohol treatment center available to anyone who might need it.

Some people are naturally violent, without drug-induced help, and the reasons are not always clear. Sometimes it is an effect of a physical condition – diseases can alter people’s personalities as completely as any chemical, and rehabilitation isn’t enough in such cases; stronger treatment is required. Of course, this can raise challenging philosophical questions about the nature of identity and if who people are is determined solely by physical conditions.

People have different tempers, too. There’s a stereotype that red hair means a fiery temper, and while that is an unfair generalization, it does make one wonder what is responsible for people’s different attitudes toward violence.

Only through understanding can violence be avoided.

A sobering statistic: More than 200,000 American women will lose their lives this year to alcohol and drug abuse and related illnesses. This is four times the number of women who will lose their lives to breast cancer. Ironically, the public thought is that this is a male dominated problem. However, these problems have plagued women for centuries.

If you or a loved one is experiencing addiction problems, a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program geared specifically toward women may be the best solution on your path to recovery. Programs that are gender specific can give women a safe place to regain control and a secure place for recovery. These types of program focus on self-esteem and self-confidence issues that will help achieve sobriety.

The issues swirling around addiction are quite different between women and men. For instance, women with children may have completely different issues. This may prevent women from acknowledging that help is needed, as well as preventing them from seeking help through treatment. Treatment centers specializing in women have programs that may include the children onsite or have other programs to integrate the family.

Studies indicate that women who abuse drugs or alcohol have certain issues that are more highly prevalent in women than in men. These include lack of self confidence, a low self esteem, depression, and lack of job skills. Other issues faced by women include a lack of a social support system and a strong value system.

Treatment facilities that focus on women analyze these issues and ensure that they are addressed during the course of treatment. These centers may use any number of therapies including support groups, detoxification, and intervention. Other treatment centers include wide ranging approaches such as anger management assistance, acupuncture, and equine-assisted therapy.

It’s never too early to consult a physician to find the right rehab program for you or a loved one.

Biking is a very popular and enjoyable sport, especially in areas where there is mountainous or flat terrain, making it conducive to ride bicycles of all kinds. Mountain biking and recreational biking is great for exercise and enjoying the outdoors. It can be done in most any area, including busy cities, countryside and neighborhoods. You can find people of all ages, sizes and backgrounds riding bikes.

Bike safety begins before leaving home, making sure that the bike works properly and there aren’t any loose parts that can cause problems once they begin riding. Preventive maintenance is much better for bicycle enthusiasts to practice so as to avoid any potential problems, even if they are simply riding around in the neighborhood. Accidents can happen quickly, but can be avoided by thinking ahead.

Biking is more fun when you can do it regularly and experience the benefits of seeing areas of your local town or city that you wouldn’t normally be able to enjoy from your car. Being able to weave in and out of narrow areas where cars can’t fit makes biking a lot of fun. Although outside freedom is in the nature of the sport, bikers should also be careful and practice safety in their enjoyment. Bikers should also be aware that their recreational sport can take them to places that can be slightly unsafe with questionable neighborhoods or people in the surroundings. For that reason, bikers should be careful to avoid areas that they don’t know very well or biking into areas of town where it is unfamiliar.

If bikers want to go to unknown areas, they should go in large groups if possible, or at least two to three people for safety. They should also take a cell phone and small amounts of cash for emergencies. If they have a problem with their bikes, they need to either go to the local police station, use their phones for emergencies to call family or 911. Bikers should avoid standing on the side of the road for a ride or getting into vehicles with strangers. Safety measures go far to be able to give the biker longer enjoyment with their sport.

There is no particular time of the year when it’s the best time to get a cold. A person can catch a cold during any season of the year, even summertime, so safety precautions are good to practice all year and all seasons to avoid the unpleasant illness. There are however a couple of seasons of the year when the odds of catching a cold are significantly increased and a persons chance of getting sick are higher. Fall and winter are considered the prime target seasons for catching a cold for the majority of people, especially in crowded, public areas like the workplace, school, church and even the local grocery store.

One thing that people can do to avoid catching colds during the prime cold season is to cover up when and where appropriate. They should avoid going outside in extremely cold weather without a covering of some sort, whether it’s a coat or a jacket. There is moisture in cold weather, and when that moisture is on the body for long periods of time, it compromises the person’s immune system and makes them more susceptible to germs and colds.

Also, to avoid catching colds and staying healthy, a person should wash their hands as often as possible. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available and avoid touching surfaces that are frequently touched by the general population. This includes doorknobs, tables and even money. Although handling these things are sometimes unavoidable, be mindful of touching them and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth after you’ve been exposed to those things. Frequent hand washing clears away germs and bacteria, things that are present and contribute to a person catching a cold.

Finally, drinking plenty of fluids during cold season keeps the body flushed and hydrated and the cold germs at bay. The best liquid to drink of course would be water, but any kind of liquid is good so long as it is frequent and in abundance. Orange juice, sports drinks and even coffee and tea are good liquids to drink and helps a person avoid sicknesses.

Home accidents account for over thirty percent of cases seen in most emergency rooms. Most home accidents involve falling down stairs or incidences with furniture. One of the most frequently occurring household accidents are situations that happen in the kitchen including grease fires, knife cuts, spills and falls on liquids in the floor and stove or ovens that are left on absentmindedly.

To decrease the likelihood of kitchen accidents, there are several things you can do to avoid problems in the kitchen and to practice kitchen safety:

1. Always monitor items that are on the stove. Never leave items cooking unattended, not even in the microwave. Set a timer to help you remember how long something has been cooking and check the temperature on the item as often as possible. It only takes a few seconds for a fire to blaze and get out of control.

2. Clean and store knives and sharp objects immediately after using them. This reduces chances of accidental cuts and the sharp objects falling onto the floor.

3. Never pour hot liquids, including oil, down the kitchen drain. Wait for the liquids to cool first before discarding them. The steam from hot water and hot oils can cause second degree burns on the body.

4. Keep a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit in the kitchen for emergency use. Make sure the fire extinguisher is within reach of but not too close to the stove area. The first aid kit should contain everything needed to take care of minor scrapes and burns like small cuts and bruises. Stock the kit with gauze, band-aids, anti-bacterial ointment and alcohol swabs. Go to the emergency room for any accidents that cannot be controlled using items in the first aid kit.

5. Taking items out of a hot stove should be done slowly and carefully. Decrease burns by using oven mitts and pot-holders to handle hot items. Make sure the material is thick and made for kitchen use.

It is also helpful to keep a short list of these safety tips in your kitchen to refer to on occasion. These tips can help you eliminate kitchen accidents and reduce hospital emergency visits.

Everyone has financial obligations—each specific to an individual’s location, values, and time. For certain people, a day without a car could make the difference between keeping and losing a job. For others, a car is a “sometimes” luxury, not really necessary all the time. Insurance for health care can be very similar. Some people suffer from chronic illnesses and need to see the doctor often, for check-ups, prescription refills, and testing. Other people are naturally gifted with prime physical fitness and health, and are never in need of anything beyond routine check-ups.

Because everyone has different needs, priorities and demands are different for everyone. There are such things as accidents, however, so any responsible adult should have enough insurance to at least be prepared for the worst. Nobody wants to pay $12,000 for stitches, so health insurance is important. It’s kind of like owning a car. Everyone needs car insurance, whether you think you need it or not, because accidents do happen. And oddly enough, if you or someone in your family gets in a car accident, when the dust settles, you need to examine all of your insurance standings.

Insurance all works together. A lot of places that provide one type of insurance also provide others, and if you get many types of insurance through one provider, you could get breaks on monthly payments and other things, like deductibles. If you’re new to the game, rather than just jumping in head first to a new insurance plan, spend some time doing research for what kind of plan would best fit you. As there are different car insurance plans, there are different types of insurance for health care too. Some people who are extremely sick get good insurance breaks, while others, who are constantly healthy, are paying more than they need to. Shop around and see what works best.

Natural health is likely one of the best ways to sustain a more long-term approach to good living. Not only are they better for your body overall, but there are more varieties and options to choose from in the natural supplements category. Since the word ‘natural’ usually refers to something that is akin to normally occurring substances, natural versus anything manufactured is often more preferable. Using natural health medicines and supplements helps you to avoiding illnesses as they work to strengthen and support the immune system. They also aid by eliminating the need for synthetic-based medications that can possibly, for extended periods of time, wreak havoc on a person’s bodily functions.

There are different types of natural medicinal substances that are used for multiple reasons:

- Ginger
A very popular, natural spice that is used for upset stomachs and nauseousness. It can be boiled and used as a liquid or used in its raw form.

- Aloe (plant)
Used primarily as a natural cooling and healing agent for burns, rashes and bug bites

- Apple Cider Vinegar
Vinegar has many uses for a wide variety of purposes including ingesting for weight loss, lowering blood pressure and as a reduced calorie alternative for salad dressing. It can also be used as an alternative for household cleaning chemicals and works just as well.

Other things that can be used naturally are: mayonnaise and egg mixture for hair conditioner, lemon and limes for salad dressings and peroxide for teeth whitening. There are many creative uses for products and foods that are found in the home.

Places where you can find foods and medications that support natural health can be found at health food stores and in dedicated aisles in the grocer’s market. These stores specialize in natural living and stock their shelves with products that are conducive towards promoting the idea of better health. And like everything else – from JR Dunn designer jewelry to accessories for your car – you can also find these items online very easily.

Being sick means having to take medications to get better. Sicknesses aren’t always serious or life-threatening, but can be life’s little inconveniences, much like a cold. There are a myriad of things to take that are good for one of the most annoying and frequently occuring illnesses that plagues most people: the common cold. The regular, common cold strikes everyone at least once in their lives, while there are some people who suffer with colds on frequenlty-occuring basis. Instead of heading to the doctor’s office each time cold symptoms begin to manifest, there are other remedies that you can take to relieve symptoms and to make the cold virtually disappear.

- Vitamin C

Begin taking doses of Vitamin C immediately after you get cold symptoms. This can be in the form of Vitamin C tablets or by drinking glasses of orange juice. Vitamin C can help strengthen the body’s immune system and lessen the degree of the cold-like symptoms.

- Increase Meals

Eating more and drinking more fluids (especially warm fluids) also help to strengthen the body’s immune system. Food also speeds up the body’s metabolism and increases energy so that bodily functions are accelerated, including the body eliminating bacteria and toxins that can be connected to the cold.

- Rest

Not necessarily anything surprising about this one, but rest is perhaps one of the most important things you can do to remedy a cold. The body repairs itself when it is at rest, therefore properly resting when you have a cold is the way to help decrease the symptoms and recuperate faster.

- Avoiding Germs

Washing your hands even AFTER you’ve gotten a cold willl still help many of your cold syptoms and keep the cold from getting any worse. Although you may not be able to completely avoid germs, you can decrease your exposure to them and lessen their affect on you by observing basic handwashing practices.

The common cold is very common and likely to affect at least one person in his or her lifetime. When and if it does ever occur with you, you will have these basic and handy tips to use to help offset any long-term discomfort from it.

The best time to each violence prevention to anyone is to stress the importance of it at an age as young as possible. We teach babies not to hit, spit or kick their siblings or playmates and continue that teaching throughout their formative years. Sometimes children learn these behavioral principles early on, and sometimes it takes other children a little longer to understand that they shouldn’t do those aggressive things.

By the time those little ones get to kindergarten, hopes are that they’ve learned social skills and there won’t be any problems with aggressive behavior. It sounds good, but it’s not always the case and behavioral skills just have to be re-taught. Teaching children how to avoid violent behavior as kindergartners should start early on and as quickly as possible.

The first step is helping them to understand social and interactive skills that teach them how to respect others by talking and sharing. Something as small even as sharing a pair of scissors or crayons can help little kids interact and learn how to practice patience while dealing with other people. Violence begins when there is no understanding or appreciation of another person’s opinion, resulting in a breakdown of communications. Teaching kindergartners to share and be polite avoids aggressive behavior and is a step towards reducing violence in their future.

To help kindergartners avoid violent behavior, adults should de-emphasize any instances where violent behavior is exhibited. This means ignoring them when they do things they shouldn’t. Aside from addressing issues that are overly-aggressive, small things like breaking in line, yelling out in class, shoving their classmate or snatching crayons from their neighbor are all things that the teacher should react calmly and quietly too. Giving the situation too much attention or dwelling on it too long reinforces to the child that they can get attention if they do “that thing.” The situation can often be diffused by addressing the problem quietly, away from the crowd (if possible) and following it up with what “is” expected from the child. Most often, by confronting the situation in this matter, they will exhibit the behavior that you want them to as long as they continue to receive a positive reaction to their behavior.

The average adult has been driving for ten years or more, especially if they started around the age of sixteen. Whenever a new driver gets on the road, no matter what age they may be, practicing safety measures is usually at the top of their priority list. They make sure they follow driving safety, stay cautious of road conditions and drive so that they protect themselves and others around them.

Occasionally when drivers have been on the road for a long time, they may forget road rules or become so accustomed to driving that they begin taking the road for granted. Here are a few tips that drivers can use to ensure that they continue to practice safe driving:

1.) Never drive while you’re in a hurry. Driving while in a hurry puts you and other people on the road at risk for accidents. To avoid hurried driving, leave for your destination in ample time so as to observe road rules and avoid potential accidents. With hazardous road conditions like rain or ice, it’s even more important to give yourself sufficient time to get to your destination safely without incident.

2.) Keep yourself abreast of driving laws and changes by periodically re-reading your state’s driving manual as frequently as possible, preferably every three to five years. On occasion, there may be changes in a state’s driving laws that drivers would be wise with which to educate themselves. You can generally find current driving manuals at your local Department of Motor Vehicle Safety.

3.) Never drink and drive. Practicing this very commonly-quoted rule is very important in practicing driving safety. Drinking alcoholic substances can alter a person’s response time while driving and can cause them to make poor decisions, like trying to drive through a light before it turns red or trying to drive quickly in front of other cars. Alcohol can cause a person to have an altered response time and prohibit their quick-response muscles from acting in sufficient time.

Practicing good safety habits can ensure a driver’s enjoyment for a long time. Understanding, educating and respecting driving laws is the key to making sure that their driving enjoyment continues.

Playing sports is probably one of the best forms of exercise that people engage in for fun, weight loss or as something they may do competitively. Sports requires a lot of energy and focus, especially if it is a team sport like football or basketball. Engaging in various sport activities also demands periods of endurance to be successful like running, swimming or skiing. As in most any sports-natured situation, safety procedures should be observed to keep the person safe, in good health and enjoyable. Here are a few sports tips to ensure that safety procedures are always practiced:

Pre-Conditioning

- Always pre-condition your body before engaging in sports. This is very important for team sports and also for solo sports. Pre-conditioning keeps the body strong and helps to avoid injuries from occuring. Include things like strength-training, lifting weights and brisk walks or runs to build the body’s endurance and stamina. This will give your body the endurance it needs to safely engage in the sport.

Proper Hydration

- Practicing sports safety also includes properly hydrating the body in order to have the stamina and endurance to engage in any sport. Hydrating can be done through adequate water intake or any sports drinks that balances sodium and electrolytes in the body. Keeping hydrated also helps the sports player to perform better and slowly raises their performance level.

Adequate Equipment

- Part of sports safety also includes having and using the proper equipment for the job. This will include things like football pads, baseball safety helmets, quality running shoes or safety swimming googles. The right sports equipment can fully protect a persons body during the sports activity and it’s important to have quality equipment to ensure complete safety.

Safety procedures don’t always have to involve anything too complicated, but sometimes only neccesitates using good judgement and practical applications. Observing good sports safety procedures can keep the player safe and greatly increase his odds at enjoying the sport for as long as possible.

Staying healthy and practicing a good healthy lifestyle is very important for a person who wants to pursue longevity and a quality life. A healthy lifestyle incorporates a lot of components that factor into making health a bigger picture than what is readily viewable. Health is more than what a person eats or drinks, but is also a mindset and a healthy, positive attitude about life.

Staying healthy is a lifelong pursuit and requires a focused mindset to ensure that it happens. Here a few tips and general guidelines for those who wish to find healthier ways to live and incorporate them into their long-term daily living:

1.) Take vitamins and supplements daily. Many times the foods we eat do not have the sufficient vitamins and nutrients that the body needs for sustained health. For that reason, taking vitamins becomes a necessity, especially if a person doesn’t have access to fresh fruits, vegetables and clean water. Although they are a supplement, they are not to be used in the place of good eating, but only to help the body.

2.) Drink water frequently. Toxins and fatty acids are carried away from the body through our urine and drinking sufficient water helps the body to achieve that goal. Water is filtered by the kidneys and passes through the elimination system in the body. Drinking water also helps the skin to stay soft and supple and keeps you from dehydrating.

3.) Eat two to four servings of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Eating these things as a complement to your meal or even as a main meal gives the body more sustained energy and stamina than other quick fix foods like dense sugar foods, high calorie sodas and fast foods. Also, cooking food from homemade is another way to ensure that your body gets all of the vitamins and nutrients that it needs from food.

4.) Exercise frequently. The average adult should exercise for twenty to forty minutes at least three to four times a week as a way to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle. Cardiovascular exercises (walking, running and swimming) as well as strength training and weight-lifting all enhance a person’s physique as well as promote muscle growth and gives them the sustained energy they need to perform basic to moderate jobs on a daily basis.

Perhaps you have a friend in need but don’t even know it! Domestic violence is more common that you think. Know the signs:

•	Is your friend or family member around anymore? Perhaps she was around all the time; however, now you see her maybe once or twice a month since she has been seeing her new boyfriend. While the throes of passion may be at work, it could also been unhealthy. When you see your friend, does she seem to be elated or controlled? Make sure to speak with her about this new friend and monitor how she refers to him and especially his moods.

•	Is your friend or family member trying to hide something? Does she often wear inappropriate clothing, such as sunglasses indoors or sweaters in the summertime? She may be trying to cover up bruises or gashes caused by domestic violence. Do not confront about this issue directly however. Try to take a gentler approach by asking about the garment itself. For example, if she is wearing a scarf in the summer time, ask “Aren’t you hot with that scarf on?” Sometimes, the victim is looking for any sort of opening in order to talk about the abuse.

•	Is your friend or family member at a loss for words? As a result of their fear of confrontation, abuse victims are often unable to communicate as well or express emotion naturally. If these people are often even the simplest choice, such as eating indoors or outdoors, they will freeze up. After all, the abuse victim has been made to believe that the wrong choice will end in severe pain. Be gentle with this person and make gestures and actions that will imply that she will not suffer any consequences by her choices. Practice patience with these reactions as well, as the victim’s hesitance will continue for quite some time.

If there is abuse, be sure to get your friend professional help fast. With these signs, she may be on the road to recovery sooner than later, and she will have you to thank.

In most all public setting, the rules for safety vary according to each different place and situation. Depending on what is going on and the environment surrounding it, safety rules and regulations may change in requirements. What may be acceptable and viable in one situation may change in another situation. Public facilities have general safety measures that they use to operate their business and to ensure safety for their customers and their business. However, even though rules may vary from one setting to another, there are some general rules that you can follow to ensure safety in most any situation. They are:

Self Protection

Always protect yourself and those with you by observing the rules that are applicable to the public place that you’re attending. It most public places, there is an understood inference that you take responsibility for your own actions and the actions of those with you. For instance, in restaurants, parents are responsible for keeping their children under control and making sure that they don’t cause any problems. You can ensure self-protection by making sure the kids understand that they shouldn’t run and play in a sit-down restaurant or stick their foot out as the waiter walks by.

Public Pools

Probably one of the most popular places for the general public to be, it is not void of its own set of rules and regulations governing this type of water entertainment. Always ensure that there is a life-guard on duty for whatever pool you may be attending. If there isn’t a lifeguard on duty, be sure that you and those with you are good swimmers and know basic pool safety rules. It also helps to understand physical safety measures like resuscitation and water danger signs in case it becomes necessary.

Always observe signs around you, and make sure to notice anything out of the ordinary or different in any situation that will help you understand how the place works and what is expected from you while you’re in that particular environment.

Jessica was an outgoing woman with a great sense of humor when she met Sam. They fell in love instantly, and after a whirlwind romance they were married. Though Jessica had always dreamed of a big wedding, they eloped because Sam hated crowds. He convinced her that their love was more important than material things. He chose her dress, telling her that she looked beautiful in a certain style.

Over time, Sam became even more controlling, cutting Jessica off from her friends. He insisted she tell him everyone she talked to, and had the home phone cut off, allowing her only a cell phone with a limited number of minutes, and checking the bill every month to see how she used them.

Jessica stayed home alone and tried to keep the house up to Sam’s exacting standards. He chose her clothes, losing his temper if she showed up wearing anything else. He became physically abusive, always blaming her for his loss of self-control. She was too afraid to leave him.

What went wrong? When Jessica first got involved with Sam, there were some red flags that could have warned her off. The first red flag is the whirlwind romance. A genuine romance will last through difficulties and time. If a man insists he can’t live without a woman when he barely knows her, it may be that he wants to be sure she doesn’t know him well before she commits to him.

A second red flag is that he ignored her desires and insisted on eloping. He only considered his own wishes, twisting her will to his through manipulation. He also used this to cut her ties with her family—the third red flag.

The fourth red flag was choosing her dress. He showed his contempt for her taste, and a foretaste of the future control over her wardrobe. If a man doesn’t trust a woman’s judgment, why would he marry her? Control! Women of all ages must be educated to recognize these patterns—to break the cycle of violence before it begins.

Establishing a Solid Health Routine

Practicing good health means deciding first that you want to pursue a better lifestyle and a healthier way of living. To do this and to meet your goals, you must first decide you should develop a consistent routine that you will be able to live by on a regular basis. This can include things like following a particular daily exercise schedule, eating a certain way, and adding more healthy foods to your diet. It could even include eliminating alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and nicotine from your lifestyle. Many individuals who have done the latter have participated in a drug addiction recovery program that has been successful in helping them break those habits and become healthier.

Making Good Health a Lifelong Pursuit

The decision to live healthy is not a one-time thought that you do at a moment’s notice. It’s a lifelong pursuit you may have to take one day at a time as you pay attention to those areas that may challenge you. Because it’s a daily journey, you should expect to make adjustments along the way as your body changes and your knowledge about healthy and good living starts to increase. You may find you need more or less of something, and it’s best to take it carefully when developing a routine rather than trying to assimilate everything all at once.

Health Counseling

A health counselor who is knowledgeable in all areas of total body health would be ideal to use as a resource when you begin your journey. Counselors can help you make good choices and work through difficult decisions that may inhibit your growth. Health counseling also includes giving you information about drugs and medicines and how they affect your body. This can help your journey to good health be successful and complete.

There is in fact, safety in numbers, especially when it is dealing with people and being in situations where a person’s physical protection is important. Safety in numbers mean that there is less likely of a chance of having something happen to you physically if there are many people around or if you’re a part of a large group of people and need protection. Safety in numbers can apply to several social situations:

1.) When exercising. It is wise to never run or jog alone outside, whether it’s a man or a woman. There are too many lurking dangers and chances of problems than if there are high numbers of people involved. In cases like this, it is far better to be in large groups of three or more, although two would be sufficient. When there are large numbers of people, there is less of a chance of having things happening and a lessened degree of incident.

2.) Walking or cruising around the neighborhood is another case of high numbers is safer than going out alone. Although the chances are slim of something happening to you in your own neighborhood, it is far better to take someone along with you and not Nedi them instead of being alone and an incident occurs.

3.) In large crowded areas or at large crowded events like outdoor concerts or shopping malls. In these situations, there are so many people around you it can be very overwhelming and can cause some people to panic and hyperventilate if they cannot find who they came with. Children should especially be watched in these conditions to ensure that they do not get lost or separated from the people they are supposed to be with.

Make a habit of always finding a buddy or a group of people to surround yourself with at large events, whether you’re an adult or a child. It’s better to be safe and cautious than to find yourself in an awkward, unsettling situation.

Medication is used in most any situation of illness, and given in correct dosages ensure that the person returns to a healthy state quicker and stronger. Giving incorrect medicine dosages can be potentially harmful for a person, especially if the medication is meant for a particular illness and is used outside of its intended reason.

Correct medication dosage depends on a variety of circumstances and several factors should be considered first:

Weight

A person’s weight is a key factor in determining correct dosages. Medicine passes through each person’s body at a different pace, and their body weight has a lot to do with how quickly it goes through this process. For example, a heavier person who weighs a lot more than a normal weight individual will require more medication. Since their body mass is heavier, the medicine will take a longer time to travel through their system, therefore giving them the correct amount and enough of it will ensure that they get what they need.

Likewise a lighter-weight person needs less medicine than a heavier person, and having too much medicine in their system can be potentially harmful than better. Always refer to the instructions that accompany the medication to determine the dosage amount, or be sure to refer to the doctor’s written instructions on prescribed medicines to be safe.

Age

A four-year old child’s brain is significantly more underdeveloped than an adult’s brain and also cannot process ingesting too much medication; therefore the medicine dosages will also be different for them. Medication bottles will most often list the appropriate dosages for different ages, and also for those ages that coincide with an estimated weight.

Illness

The determining dosage will depend on the illness that the medication is treating. Although there are some medications that are dual-purpose (they can treat two illnesses), more often, one medication type corresponds to one type of illness. It is unwise to mix medications or to use another medicine for its other intended use to treat an illness that it was not meant for.

Always follow the doctor’s instructions when administering medicine for best results. If it is any over-the-counter medication, follow the instructions carefully and you can avoid under-doses or over-doses and any associated problems.

Everyone needs to be educated on what constitutes abuse as well as the effects of abuse. Many actions that seem harmless are actually considered criminal. If they happen between people in a relationship, they are domestic abuse—even if they aren’t at home when they happen.

It may surprise people to realize they have legally kidnapped someone if they keep them from leaving the room during an argument. Destruction or vandalism of property without permission is a crime, even among family members. Feel like egging someone’s house tonight? Better watch it—that is criminal mischief.

If an “ex” uses their key to go in someone’s house and wait to confront them, it is burglary even if you don’t take anything. If they wait around for them against their will, even outdoors or in a public place, it is stalking.

Whether actual injury occurs is not the issue. The issue is the threat of injury. An object thrown at someone is violence, whether the item hits the targeted person or not. A threat to kill someone if they leave is violence. A threat to kill yourself if they leave you is violence.

Domestic violence is any pattern of behavior that is used to control someone in a close relationship through fear, threats, or injury.

Although the police are concerned with the criminal aspect of violence, there are other forms of domestic abuse. They may not lead to arrest, but there are advocates in the community who can help victims. These include emotional abuse such as constant criticism and belittling. The spouse who insists on complete control of the finances is emotionally abusive. Other forms of abuse include isolating the victim from family and friends, destroying their relationships, and yelling.

If you, or someone you know, are going through any of these in any relationship, please call a victims’ advocate to find out what to do. Bruises, black eyes, and broken bones are not the only symptoms of abuse. Emotional abuse has long-term negative effects, but there is help available. Please call. Reach out and get help.

Cardiovascular exercises are the best way to maintain and ensure a healthy heart for a long time. They key is to make sure that you perform some type of cardiovascular exercises on a daily basis for at least twenty minutes or more. This gets the heart muscle pumping and the blood moving through it at an even, steady pace. Heart focused exercises strengthen the heart muscle and helps it to perform better in the body.

There are many healthy exercises that you can perform inside and outside of a gym setting and achieve the same results. It is not necessary to spend additional money for fancy equipment or any accessories in order to get in a basic cardio workout. All a person needs is a plan and time to carry out the plan on a timed, daily basis so they will see results. Popular cardio exercises include:

1.) Elliptical training. This is one piece of gym equipment that is highly effective and burns a high number of calories per hour, primarily because it is more akin to running with less impact on the person’s joints and limbs.

2.) Running – outside and inside. Running builds the body’s endurance over a period of time although it burns fewer calories per hour.

3.) Aerobic exercises. This can include step aerobics or any movement that gets the arms moving and keeps them moving for a length of time. It can be varied to suit a persons taste.

4.) Cycling – indoor cycling and outdoor biking. Very popular and it burns a lot of calories in addition to increasing muscle mass and strength.

5.) Jumping Rope. This is an exercise that is frequently overlooked and often not taken as serious as the others. It is very good at increasing stamina and coordination. Well conditioned athletes do this often as a part of their routine.

These are just a few exercises that you can do to increase your heart rate and help strengthen your heart muscles. The exercises also help tremendously with overall body strength and flexibility as well as increasing lung capacity which helps a person with their stamina and endurance. Taking the time to do something everyday is beneficial and enjoyable, especially if you find something that you like to do and make a commitment to do it on a regular, routine and consistent basis.

Violence can erupt from most any situation, personal or social. Harassment of any nature (sexual, verbal or physical) or violent situations that arise from exposure to these things can make any situation uncomfortable and difficult to deal with. Violence is often a result of failure to deal with uncomfortable situations that come up, and not finding an amenable situation to diffuse the problem.

Violence of any nature can be avoided with foresight and proper planning and make any situation more pleasant to deal with. Violent behavior doesn’t have to be the end result of any problem or situation that seems exhaustible. With a little planning and using the tips listed below, you can avoid violence and have peaceful conditions surrounding you.

1.) Do not respond to every situation, through verbal or actionable behavior. This also includes social situations that are awkward to deal with or that are difficult to respond. Knowing when to respond, what to say, what to avoid saying and to whom you need to respond to is crucial information that can be used to diffuse potentially violent situations.

2.) Behave in a manner that doesn’t promote aggression. This means not cutting people off in traffic or letting someone else go in front of you in the grocery store. Behaving offensively instead of defensively is more conducive to peaceful situations instead of promoting anger or unacceptable behavior from other people.

3.) Always respond with kind and deliberate communication, as this is another thing that helps to avoid violent situations. Kind gestures, smiles and low-key responses are behavioral characteristics of people who want to make sure they don’t promote physical or verbal problems.

Violent situations don’t always have to erupt or become something that is completely out of control. With a little proactive thinking and deliberate, responsible behavior, you can experience a peaceful, settling environment.

People want to look and feel good every day and want to do that for as long as they can. When they feel good in the body, they are able to enjoy life more and have more opportunities to do things that they otherwise would not get a chance to do if they were in poor health. Healthy living is a good habit to pursue because of all of the advantages that it offers:

- A possibility at extending your lifespan

- Less occurrences of illnesses and sicknesses

- Decreased need to take synthetic, manufactured medications when (or if) needed

As with any lifestyle, living healthy is a routine of consistent habits that a person starts and continues not only in an effort just to be healthy, but to expand their quality of life in broader terms. There are several consistent habits that a person can develop that will promote healthy living in their lives. Some of these habits include:

1. Don’t eat junk food. Eating out in fast food restaurants and eating processed foods is one area to stay away from for those who want to live healthy. Make a decision to eat more fresh fruits, vegetables and drink water daily.

2. Get plenty of rest. An average of six to seven hours a day is ideal for a strong, healthy body.

3. Eliminate alcohol and tobacco from your life. Although this is a debatable topic and a sensitive issue for many people, eliminating these two things could be more beneficial than not so it would be worth it to give it a chance to see if there is a difference. Tobacco decreases lung capacity and alcohol adds a lot of calories to your diet and is also a diuretic which pulls water out of a person’s body.

4. Think positive frequently and do things that promote good thinking so that it is reflected in your body. This means making good choices on little daily details. Proper mindset and appropriate thinking can make a significant difference in the way a person feels, thinks and acts.

Learning is something that everyone needs to make a habit of by exposing themselves to the resources that can bring them knowledge and understanding. There are many resources for learning with an abundance of books and libraries, but the Internet has quickly become the preferred source of learning for adults and children, and has become one of the first places people go to for information.

Foraying into the World Wide Web is a very entertaining, educational and wonderful place to be to gain knowledge and find resources for various situations. However, the Internet can also be a dangerous place, especially for children if they don’t know what sites and pages to avoid. They may find themselves in Internet territory that is unsafe and scary. As adults, we can help them navigate their way around the Internet and still have fun and learn all at the same time. Here’s how:

1.) Install firewalls onto the computer system to make sure children don’t venture into taboo Internet territory, whether on purpose or by mistake. Firewalls can prevent them from going into sites that are age-inappropriate. Parents and other adults can safely monitor the firewalls by keeping software updates current and making sure that the firewalls are properly installed.

2.) Parents can and should closely monitor Internet safety sites that their children frequent. To do this, they can review the computer’s cookies to look at the last few site(s) that have been clicked.

3.) Communication is a key component in observing Internet safety for kids and helps parents to avoid problems that can happen as a result. Talking to kids about what is safe, what conversations are appropriate and inappropriate, what type of information they should give out online and pertinent information like this will help discourage unsavory behavior in the Internet world.

Fear should not be a part of the wonderful Internet, but through proper education and a thorough working knowledge of Internet acceptable behavior, children can use this invaluable resource as a tool to use to enhance and expand their knowledge base.

Teen violence is a real problem for many of today’s schools. Administrators have the challenge of finding ways to keep teens from committing acts of violence or from becoming a victim of violent situations. In many regards, students may not understand what behavioral characteristics lead to violent behavior, therefore it is the duty of the school’s administrators and faculty to educate and discourage behavior that can lead to violent situations.

Teenagers are faced with real problems in the school system today with drugs, violence and peer pressure from their peer groups. They may be faced with situations that they do not know how to handle. They may also have the unfortunate possibility of not having been educated on how to avoid situations that lead to mass violence. Here are a few tips that can help educated those teens and those that are responsible for them:

For Educators:

1.) Have frequent educational school seminars and meeting on what typifies violent behavior. As things change, so do rules and laws and things to watch for. Educating students helps them to understand what to avoid.

2.) Have solo meetings with students as needed. One way to dispel violence is to cut it off before it begins. Students with mild violence or behavioral problems can usually be helped before the situation gets worse or more situations occur.

For Students:

1.) Avoid situations that place you in harms way. If you’re approached to do things that can cause problems, detach yourself from those persons that can bring you into trouble.

2.) Ask for help. If you’re placed into any awkward situation with your friends, go to a counselor or an adult that may be able to bring closure to the situation or remove you from it altogether. Association is the first component that gets students into trouble and they usually don’t ask for help until it has gotten out of their control.

Violence is not something that the student has to settle for just because they’re in awkward situations or they feel there isn’t anything that they can do. Help and education is available if they need it and they should reach out as soon as possible for assistance, education and understanding.

Frequent exercising is a very good habit to adopt and can be fairly easy to incorporate into any active, busy lifestyle. Your exercise of choice of course should be one that is fairly easy to navigate and enjoyable so that you can continue to pursue it, even when it becomes harder or boring. You can enjoy this type of exercise indoors, although many people who love the sport and make a lifestyle change with it tend to favor outside running because of the challenges that it presents (hills, rough terrain, etc.) and the decreased likelihood that it will become boring and lose its appeal.

Jogging and running are exercises that people pick up quickly because it is easy to develop and the investment to start it is very low. A good pair of running shoes and a well-planned route is all you need to make sure that you can create a flexible exercise routine that will provide you with days, months and even years of enjoyment. However, there is another aspect that runners and joggers should observe when they start with the sport, and that is practicing safety precautionary measures for protection.

1.) Never run alone, if possible. This goes for a man or woman and should be practiced as a part of habit as many personal safety challenges exist that can be discouraged by running with a partner or in groups.

2.) Don’t run at night. Aside from the hazards of night time vision challenges, drivers may not observe or respect road runners, therefore try to run in the daytime or inside at a gym if possible.

3.) Never run the same route twice. Vary your routes so as not to conform to a predictable schedule. This also helps to break up monotony on a run and keep the running lifestyle fresh at all times.

Observing these rules can help any runner to enjoy their sport for long periods of time, even when they find themselves running alone. Making these tips a regular part of any jogging or running routine is the beginning of a clear pathway towards exercise safety.

During the blazing heat of summer months in most areas of the country, it’s very common to be faced with varying temperatures anywhere from the mid-80′s to temperatures that hover in the low 100′s. Because of this, there are many heat-related illnesses that are a result of these high numbers. Implementing a few precautionary rules during periods of high heat can help a person avoid heatstroke and other accompanying illnesses. They include:

1.) Avoiding any activities that are done in the heat of the day or at high noon. This is when the sun is at the hottest that it will be during the course of the day. This is also the most common time when dehydration can occur, so it is wise to avoid fluid-depleting activities and outdoor sports, if possible.

2.) Drink plenty of fluids. Like mentioned in the prior tip, dehydration can occur at anytime and can happen rather quickly. To help avoid this, keep your body constantly hydrated by drinking adequate fluids, including water and sports drinks that contain sufficient sodium that will keep your body adequately supplied with the fluids that are lost during sweating.

3) Avoid diuretics. A diuretic is any drink that causes the body to retain salts and dries out the body. This includes beverages like coffees, teas, alcoholic beverages, sodas and even some milk-based products like coffee blended beverages.

4.) Wear protective clothing. This applies to anyone who is outside for any reason and they are going to be out in the sun for any period of time. Protective clothing includes hats, sunglasses with ultraviolet ray protection, light, cool-colored clothing and protective sunscreen for the body.

In cases of heatstroke, it is advisable to seek emergency care at a medical facility and to quickly begin re-hydrating the body through fluid intake as soon as possible. Heat-related illnesses don’t have to happen and using these few general tips can help ensure that they won’t.

Making your home a safe place for the baby is very important. Babies have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and need a safe environment to quench their thirst. Having things in a controlled, safe environment leaves their small world completely open for them to learn and explore without being in harms way. Here are a few tips to ensure that they can do that:

1.) Place safety plugs for outlets in all open outlets in your home. As babies start crawling and exploring, they learn by touching and tasting. They instinctively drawn to place things in their mouths and to reach out and touch objects. Outlets can be very dangerous if they place their fingers in them, so therefore protecting them by closing up outlets can help tremendously.

2.) Never give a baby a bath in hot water, but use warm, tepid water instead. Hot water above 75 degrees or more can cause skin burns and be completely uncomfortable as well. Water that is too hot can also completely dries out the baby’s skin, creating dryness, flakiness and soreness over his skin.

3.) Remove all hanging cords, strings or anything that the baby can pull from all areas around the home where they may be prone to hurt themselves. Take cords to curtains and loop them out of the baby’s reach, as well as removing ceiling fans from within their grasp or where their fingers can reach.

4.) Remove all chemicals and hazardous materials from out of the baby’s reach. Most homes keep cleaning solutions underneath sinks and cabinets, but to protect the baby and make the home very safe for the baby, it’s better to take chemical and cleaning solutions and place them above counter space, completely out of their reach.

Being thorough in baby-proofing the home makes the home a joyful, fun and safe environment for them to learn and grow. It also gives the parent peace of mind knowing that the baby is out of harms way and can play to their hearts content!

If you don’t have health insurance that covers prescription medications, you can save money by getting free discount prescription cards for the whole family. You can get a discount of up to 75 percent on prescriptions at thousands of locations including places such as Wal-mart, Walgreen’s, and many other national and local pharmacies, super stores, and grocery stores.

And what’s great about these prescription cards is you don’t have to worry about qualifying. Anyone can get a prescription card just by going online and filling out a form. Activation is instantaneous and there are no waiting periods or membership fees. Once you’ve filled out the form, you’ll be able to print out your prescription card and bring it to a pharmacy for an instant discount.

If you want an idea of the savings you’ll receive on prescriptions you’re currently taking, some prescription card companies have the ability to search by the drug name and then choose a local pharmacy to see what the price is. This makes saving money quick, easy, and convenient.

The discounts on the prescription cards come from the manufacturers of the prescription drugs who make an agreement with the prescription card company to give a discount to help consumers with the expense of prescriptions. This is why they’re available free to anyone who wants and needs them. Many people have chronic conditions that require a new prescription filled every month. For these individuals, the cost of prescriptions can be astronomical if they do not have insurance to cover them. These free discount prescription cards are a great way to reduce the cost of these monthly prescriptions by receiving a discount each and every month.

So if you’re looking for a way to reduce your monthly budget, be sure to get your free prescription card today. Every little bit helps, and since it’s free with no obligation, there’s no reason not to print one out today.
