Potential Situations that can lead to Violence

No one likes to be in a violent situation, nor in one that is uneasy and headed towards that direction. Violence is a very serious act that often starts with emotions that get out of control. Many things can contribute to violent behavior and outbursts that occur with people, but often after a situation has died down, no one can really pinpoint what happened to cause things to spark.

Situations that lead to violent behavior often start out innocently enough and escalate with the wrong look, the wrong words or anything else that sparks off the instigator. There are several indicators that a person can look for in situations that are potentially harmful, but here are very important ones to keep your eye on in case you’re ever involved in one:

- Know the Person
The best way to get to know a person is to do a little research and find out more about them. Do they have a temper? Do they always act out? Knowing these things can help the person involved avoid anything harmful or embarrassing. This is good only if you are acquainted with the person already. If you’re not:

- Watch the Person
If you don’t know what may set the person off, just sit back and watch them and look for other physical or verbal cues that would signal to you that a violent situation is about to erupt.

- Mind Your Business
If the person driving sporadically is not in your lane, don’t think that you have to take care of it. If they are in your lane and they become hostile or irate, stay calm and don’t cause a scene. Call the authorities if things get out of hand.

Violent behavior certainly doesn’t have to be something that you find yourself in if you make sure that you avoid the things that can cause it. Keep your eyes, ears and mind sharp and watch for those cues!

How to properly dispose of needles

The sight of a needle is enough to make a person weakened or faint. Many people have a great fear when it comes to needles and injections and would just prefer to not be bothered with it. However, there are some types of illnesses or medical conditions that warrant the use of needles on a frequent basis, some as often as two to three times a day. When this is the case, there can potentially be an assortment of needles lying around if they are not disposed of properly, in a person’s home or even in their beds.

Hypodermic needles are very sharp and very pointed since their job is to pierce the skin and adequately deliver the medicine in the vial. Used hypodermic needles that have already pierced a person’s body and entered into their skin contain small particles of the person’s skin and blood and any other contaminants that may be present in their system.

Used hypodermic needles are a haven for germs and bacteria, and also a breeding ground for attracting any other airborne contaminants since it is exposed after being used. Properly and safely disposing of used needles is a good habit to develop in order to offset any other medical issues.

- Use a Sharp container to insert the needle after use. This is the clear container with the red top that is used for this.

- Ensure that used needles in their disposed containers get to the right waste facility.

- Immediately handle the needle after using and don’t lay it down somewhere, taking the risk that it will be forgotten.

Facilities like doctor’s offices and individuals who use needles frequently would do well to adopt practices that will help them remove them safely. It is not hard to do, but taking a little extra time to ensure the safe disposal of the needles can make a big difference in a person’s health state.

Sleep your way to better health

Our state of health is determined not only by what we eat or drink, but also by how much sleep and rest our bodies get. Studies have shown that people who get seven or more hours of sleep each night are also more likely to not be overweight, stressed or have any other physical ailments that wreak havoc on their bodies.

Many people underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep and think that they can get by with very little, sometimes trying to subsist off of two, three or even four hours at a time. What usually results is a shortened attention span, nervous energy, the inability to focus and making physical mistakes that can potentially be quite harmful.

Proper rest is also the key to an overall state of health since adequate rest helps to equip our bodies with the energy it needs to fight off anything from the common cold to some types of diseases. So how can you get more sleep to get the most benefits?

- Have a set time to retire for the evening. No matter what’s going on, get up and go to bed at the designated time. This gets your body in the habit of sleeping at a certain time and trained to resting at will.

- Take power naps throughout the day, if possible. This can super-charge you for anything else that the day may hold and give you a huge boost of natural energy.

- Don’t do anything stimulating before bedtime, like exercising or drinking caffeine. This can keep your body wired too much to wind down and prepare to go to sleep.

With the proper rest and a good night’s sleep every night, a person has the ability to achieve more and to be more productive. Without it, they are faced with many disadvantages that in the end prove to not be worth the time that they cut into their rest.

Can Social Smoking Hurt?

Everybody’s heard about social drinking. There is a population out there that advocates having an alcoholic drink or two in social gatherings to maintain that perfect balance. If trends are anything to go by, social smoking could soon be a common phenomenon. As the term implies, social smokers light up only occasionally in a gathering or an event.

The reasoning is that a few cigarettes a week are definitely less harmful than a whole pack or packs every day. While this may seem consistent, there are many compelling reasons why social smoking cannot be dismissed as another harmless practice. The first reason is that the definition of social smoking is subject to a whole range of interpretations; it could mean one cigarette or several packs at one go.

The possibility of social smoking developing into a full-blown habit cannot be ruled out either. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s estimated that 46 million Americans smoke and 70% of them want to stop. Moreover, the human body is not built for smoking tobacco, period. Even one cigarette leaves an imprint on body chemistry and arterial walls. Occasional smoking may not put your chances of getting cancer on par with a serious smoker, but it will definitely be higher than a non-smoker’s.

A worrying fact is that most social smokers are young, and are the targets of marketing campaigns by tobacco companies who don’t want to lose out on this segment. The Anti-Tobacco Bill aims to protect this vulnerable chunk of the population from such campaigns that can increase tobacco usage.

Electronic cigarettes are a good choice if you’re not ready to kick the habit just yet. Apart from being available in a variety of flavors, it also offers the benefits of being tar free. The nicotine is still there though but if you want to retain your social smoker status, an electronic cigarette is a step in the safer direction.

A sobering statistic: More than 200,000 American women will lose their lives this year to alcohol and drug abuse and related illnesses. This is four times the number of women who will lose their lives to breast cancer. Ironically, the public thought is that this is a male dominated problem. However, these problems have plagued women for centuries.

If you or a loved one is experiencing addiction problems, a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program geared specifically toward women may be the best solution on your path to recovery. Programs that are gender specific can give women a safe place to regain control and a secure place for recovery. These types of program focus on self-esteem and self-confidence issues that will help achieve sobriety.

The issues swirling around addiction are quite different between women and men. For instance, women with children may have completely different issues. This may prevent women from acknowledging that help is needed, as well as preventing them from seeking help through treatment. Safety Measures for Bikers

Biking is a very popular and enjoyable sport, especially in areas where there is mountainous or flat terrain, making it conducive to ride bicycles of all kinds. Mountain biking and recreational biking is great for exercise and enjoying the outdoors. It can be done in most any area, including busy cities, countryside and neighborhoods. You can find people of all ages, sizes and backgrounds riding bikes.

Bike safety begins before leaving home, making sure that the bike works properly and there aren’t any loose parts that can cause problems once they begin riding. Preventive maintenance is much better for bicycle enthusiasts to practice so as to avoid any potential problems, even if they are simply riding around in the neighborhood. Accidents can happen quickly, but can be avoided by thinking ahead.

Biking is more fun when you can do it regularly and experience the benefits of seeing areas of your local town or city that you wouldn’t normally be able to enjoy from your car. Being able to weave in and out of narrow areas where cars can’t fit makes biking a lot of fun. Although outside freedom is in the nature of the sport, bikers should also be careful and practice safety in their enjoyment. Bikers should also be aware that their recreational sport can take them to places that can be slightly unsafe with questionable neighborhoods or people in the surroundings. For that reason, bikers should be careful to avoid areas that they don’t know very well or biking into areas of town where it is unfamiliar.

If bikers want to go to unknown areas, they should go in large groups if possible, or at least two to three people for safety. They should also take a cell phone and small amounts of cash for emergencies. If they have a problem with their bikes, they need to either go to the local police station, use their phones for emergencies to call family or 911. Bikers should avoid standing on the side of the road for a ride or getting into vehicles with strangers. Safety measures go far to be able to give the biker longer enjoyment with their sport.

How to Stay Healthy During Cold Season

There is no particular time of the year when it’s the best time to get a cold. A person can catch a cold during any season of the year, even summertime, so safety precautions are good to practice all year and all seasons to avoid the unpleasant illness. There are however a couple of seasons of the year when the odds of catching a cold are significantly increased and a persons chance of getting sick are higher. Fall and winter are considered the prime target seasons for catching a cold for the majority of people, especially in crowded, public areas like the workplace, school, church and even the local grocery store.

One thing that people can do to avoid catching colds during the prime cold season is to cover up when and where appropriate. They should avoid going outside in extremely cold weather without a covering of some sort, whether it’s a coat or a jacket. There is moisture in cold weather, and when that moisture is on the body for long periods of time, it compromises the person’s immune system and makes them more susceptible to germs and colds.

Also, to avoid catching colds and staying healthy, a person should wash their hands as often as possible. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available and avoid touching surfaces that are frequently touched by the general population. This includes doorknobs, tables and even money. Although handling these things are sometimes unavoidable, be mindful of touching them and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth after you’ve been exposed to those things. Frequent hand washing clears away germs and bacteria, things that are present and contribute to a person catching a cold.

Finally, drinking plenty of fluids during cold season keeps the body flushed and hydrated and the cold germs at bay. The best liquid to drink of course would be water, but any kind of liquid is good so long as it is frequent and in abundance. Orange juice, sports drinks and even coffee and tea are good liquids to drink and helps a person avoid sicknesses.

- Increase Meals

Eating more and drinking more fluids (especially warm fluids) also help to strengthen the body’s immune system. - Rest

During hot summer months, a great way to cool off is by taking a dip in the pool and letting the water whisk away the scorch of the blazing heat. Swimming is a favorite pastime for children and adults. It’s a great way to get in a good exercise regimen and a fun way to cool off from summertime heat. Cooling off at the local community pool is the way most people find to swim if they don’t have a personal pool at their home.

Enjoying the pool is also a great way to entertain and have fun with friends. Pool parties are frequent entertainment venues and can provide countless hours of fun. However, along with the fun and entertainment that this popular pastime provides, there are safety issues that must be observed so that the swimmer can continue to enjoy their favorite community pool and stay in good health. Some good tips for public pool and general pool safety include:

1.) Observe community pool rules and acclimate yourself with their requirements and the do’s and dont’s of their establishment. Part of the pool requirements will likely be included in your membership fees and may also be posted inside the pools common area where traffic is heavy.

2.) Don’t run at the pool or alongside the pool at any time. This is a very dangerous situation and a great cause for concern for many public pools. There is a lot of water on the rim of the pool, in the common walking area, therefore running and playing close to this area is highly discouraged because one slip can become a big problem and cause severe accidents.

3.) Bathe before entering the pool. This reduces the transference of germs and bacteria and shows common courtesy to those around you.

These few, basic tips for public pool safety will make your visit to the local community pool more enjoyable and healthier in the long run.
