Safety Tips After Leaving An Abusive Relationship

Posted on 12th July 2011 by admin in Safety,Violence Prevention - Tags: , ,

You’ve made the right step and left an abusive relationship. This is never an easy thing to do, but it was the right thing. For many women, it takes more than one attempt before they’re able to leave an abusive relationship for good. There’s never any excuse for a man to hit a woman.

Don’t ever let your guard down when you’re walking away from a bad situation. There are multiple safety tips to follow after leaving an abusive relationship.

Immediately change your cell phone and house number. The last thing you need are threatening phone calls. You should also be careful when using wireless internet and putting your information online.

If the abuse was extremely violent, you should think about getting a restraining order against your ex. Getting a restraining order means that if he goes within a certain amount of feet of you, it will be illegal. But keep in mind that a restraining doesn’t always mean he won’t contact you, but if he tries, he could be arrested. Always, always keep a copy of the restraining order in your purse or pocket all the time.

If there is a place where he goes to frequently, try not to go there. If you feel really uncomfortable and worried about breaking into your home, think about moving to a different area. Make sure anyone who has the new address doesn’t give it to him.

Make sure your home is safely secured each night. It’s often recommended to install an alarm system and a camera with lighting outside if needed. This might seem extreme, but this is your safety you’re trying to protect.

Let your neighbors know about the situation and if they ever see your ex showing up to your house have them contact the police immediately.

Violence and Prejudice Happening At Work

Posted on 16th March 2011 by admin in Violence Prevention - Tags: , ,

Prejudice is happening more and more in the work place. According to many reports, more than two million workers reported that they were victims of prejudice and violence while at work. More than 10 years ago there were reports stating that 25 percent of workers reported being harassment, threatened and physically attacked while at work. It’s gotten worse now. In fact, violence is currently the main cause of death in the work place for women and the second leading for men. N0t to mention that each year there’s more than 1,000 homicides happening in the work place.  This should not be happening.

While many people only thing about bullying in school, it’s also happening at work. The main problem of violence and prejudice at work is a result of bulling. People might not notice it right away, but it’s there. Bullying can be anything from physical and verbal abuse, any type of harassment, violence, and discrimination.

If you work at a place that involves money, you could be a high risk for problems. Keep in mind that no office is completely immune to violence and prejudice there. While some are considered high risk, every company should be on the lookout to violence in their office.

Just like with schools, the work place is required to have a zero tolerance policy for violence, harassment and bullying. Employers need to, if they haven’t already, create an extremely strict policy against bullying and violence. The policy will have to state exactly what is and isn’t accepted. The policy needs to state all the consequences for those who violate these terms. This is something that employers need to get more serious with before anything horrible happens.

Assessing Violence Threat Made By A Co-Worker

Posted on 9th March 2011 by admin in Violence Prevention - Tags: , ,

When you head to work each morning you want to know you’re going into a safe environment where you don’t have to worry about something bad happening. While most people do work in a safe environment there are people who don’t.

Violence in the work place is a serious problem that can happen in different ways. These threats could be verbal or physical threats. Dealing with violence at work is an issue that could be spotted and fixed with cooperation from the employers and employees.

Majority of the work places in the United States will have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to violence. The policies should cover the consequences of violating the terms of the zero tolerance policy. For it to be a hostile work place, employees will be feeling very uncomfortable of feel that they’re being verbally or physically threatened. These types of threats or threats of any kind need to be taken seriously before things get even worse than how they are.

Everyone at work will have to take responsibility in order to prevent violence at work. Employers are putting the responsibility on co-workers and their managers to figure out where the problem is and having them solve it since they’ll more than likely see it happen themselves. Dealing with violence at work isn’t that easy.

Think about the situation. If someone tried or actually harmed another employee than action needs to be taken immediately. If it’s something happening now that’s serious than police should be notified. Don’t assume that someone else will report it. Report the problem yourself, especially if you witnessed it first hand.

If the problem isn’t violent just yet, look at your work’s policy for this type of behavior. Violence should never happen at work. It’s important to keep an eye out for warning signs and take action immediately before anything happens.

Safety Tips For The Work Place

Posted on 7th March 2011 by admin in Safety,Violence Prevention - Tags: , ,

It’s often times hard to imagine having to deal with violence while at work. Many people never think about job safety because they’re not working at a place where they feel they’re at high risk from violence happening. The sad truth is that violence can happen at any work place whether it’s from an employee or an on-the-job injury. Injuries and violence can happen no matter where you’re working.

It’s unfortunate to have to think about, but it’s important to think about your safety when you’re at home trying to figure out what to wear. This does sound silly and even stupid, but the clothes you wear could actually put your at work from being injured at work. For instance, if you’re working in a place where you work with big machines, don’t wear anything that could get stuck in them. You can get seriously injured from that.

If you’re working for a place where you’re walking around a lot on floors that don’t have carpets, don’t wear any shoes that have large heels. You could easily slip if you onto the floor that’s wet or you can put too much stress on your feet, which could end up causing you a lot of pain.

We all deserve to be in a work place that’s a safe environment and not have to deal with any type of harassment. The most popular form of harassment is sexual, but it’s not the only one. Any jokes, comments or gestures that are not warranted are considered harassment.

Employers have spent hundreds of dollars on training materials to help inform and prevent harassment in the work place, but it doesn’t always stick. These training materials can’t just magically stop the harassment. It’s those doing the harassing that need to stop.

It’s always better to be fully prepared in the event that something could happen in the work place.

Posted on 10th February 2011 by admin in Violence Prevention - Tags: ,

Violence prevention for young kids is an important job, which needs more of an effort from parents, teachers and the kids themselves. Violence among young kids is becoming a huge problem, according to many reports. In fact, more than 630,000 students between 10 and 24 were in the emergency room being treated for injuries that were violent-related in 2007.

Youth violence can be in several different forms. It can range from rape, murder, assault, pushing, smacking, punching and bullying. Not taking care of this horrible situation can create many problems more severe than this later down the road.

Identifying the risk factors in violence among young children is fairly complicated to figure out.  Between peer pressure, drugs, alcohol and family problems, there’s a lot of things that could factor in teen violence.

Schools are being too lenient, event ignoring, some of the bullying that’s going on in schools today. There are times where a lot of violence happens outside of school as well. There’s violence in the cafeteria, during recess, on the playground and even on the school bus. This is why it’s crucial that schools get professional training on violence prevention. This is something that can’t be ignored and has to be taken care of.

Teens these days are feeling like the teachers are ignoring the situation, which in the end could make things worse.

Sometimes violence begins in the household. Many kids blame their parents for not controlling them the way they should be. The parents need to take responsibility and discipline their kids when they act up. Violence should never be ignored.

Violence in schools is getting out of hand, making it difficult for many people to want to keep going to school. There have been lots of reports in the news of kids committing suicide because of teen bullying. All these acts could have been prevented had the school done something. Ideas For Violence Prevention In School

Posted on 8th February 2011 by admin in Violence Prevention - Tags: ,

School bullying and violence is quickly becoming a huge, horrible problem going on in the lives of teenagers. Violence is causing a huge threat to the students as well as the teachers. This is why violence prevention in school and the community is really important.

Preventing violence in school will vary based on the rules the school has and how serious the violence is in the school. The school’s budget and the teacher’s support and cooperation will also factor in the school’s ability to prevent violence in school.

One thing schools can do in hopes of preventing violence is to add some more after school programs, sports or anything that will get the students more involved. Schools could also get stricter with the attendance policies.

While many people think schools should just start punishing students and things will get better. This isn’t the case. According to reports, federal law actually limits the amount of discipline done in schools. The federal law does this to avoid schools from spending too much money and abusing the power of authority against the students. They also state in their law that schools must abide by the policy of a zero-tolerance for violence in schools.

Another idea would be to change the environment the students are in. Because of budget cuts a lot of schools have to downsize, which increases the amount of students in a classroom dramatically. Schools are now brining in metal detectors and security cameras at all of the entryways at the school to provide additional security.

Schools could offer a class in violence prevention where teachers and counselors can do special workshops with the students on violence and how to prevent and stop it.

School violence is getting worse for many students by the day. Schools need to find ways of preventing and stopping the violence going on. It might cost the school some money with finding ways to prevent the violence, but it’s an important matter that needs to be taken care of. Teachers need to stop ignoring the situation and start doing something.

Improving Violence Prevention Programs In Schools

Posted on 3rd February 2011 by admin in Violence Prevention - Tags: ,

We always hear on the news and see it in the newspaper just how bad violence is in the schools. What we’re also always hearing about is the fact that teachers aren’t doing much. In fact, many students have said that teachers blame those who are being bullying because they must be doing something wrong. This isn’t true. The violence happening in schools today need to be stopped.

According to reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 38 percent of public schools located in the United States has experienced at least one violent incident that results to a police investigation or involvement in 2005 and 2006. This number is expected to go up when reports of the past couple of years are released.

The violence going on in schools has to do with the fact that schools aren’t doing any type of violence prevention program. While these programs do exist, most of them don’t go over very well if at all. If schools tried hard enough the battle against the violence in schools could be successful. It’s important for the school to come up with a program that will fit the needs of what they’re looking to accomplish.

Once you’ve implemented the program keep track of its progress. Try to do a yearly evaluation to see if the violence prevention program is really working. The administrator in charge of the violence prevention program should be the one doing the evaluation.

This will be your chance that the program is actually meeting what the schools need. To accomplish this, do what many writers do to get their story, go directly to the source. Talk to other facility members, teachers and students to get their viewpoints on how well the violence prevention program is working. They might see things that you’re not seeing.

Stand by the zero tolerance policy that schools are required to have. Make sure those who violate this rule be punished accordingly. Schools should no longer turn a blind eye to violence.

Adding Violence Prevention Programs At Work

Posted on 1st February 2011 by admin in Violence Prevention - Tags: ,

Many people feel safe going to work. No one ever expects that they can be hard while in the workplace. The sad news is that violence at work is something that occurs in many different ways. Violence at work can be anything from verbal and physical abuse to making threats, assault someone and homicide. It’s required that employers will have to take charge and teach their employees about the issues of violence and how to eliminate the risk of violence through prevention.

It’s never easy being able to predict any possibility of violence. Even if the risk is high, employers can’t really predict if or when it’ll happen. According to reports employers will have to have some sort of violence prevention program where workers can learn about violence and how to lower the risk of violence from happening in the workplace.

More than two million workers in the United States have become victims to violence crimes while at work each and every year. Those working in the law and correctional facilities are going to be surrounded by violence so they’re a higher risk of experiencing it while at work. Even those who work with money, such as tellers, cab drivers and clerks, are going to be at high risk as well. If you work late hours and in a bad area, you too are at risk.

A company should start by creating a policy and use it. Just like schools, there needs to be a no tolerance policy against violence. This is something that should be in the manual you get when you first start working for the company. To have the prevention policy be successful there are certain things that need to be included in it. Employees need to learn how to spot any problems happening at work, being able to spot a situation that could turn bad and how to mediate any coworkers who are in the middle of a conflict.

Many reports state that it’s recommend to have security cameras in the office building, an alarm system and specific policies that employees need to abide by.
