Everyone would love to have a vacation free of accidents and injuries, but in the off chance they do occur, do yourself a favor and be prepared. A few minutes online today could spare you a hurt wallet tomorrow.

When travelling to a new destination, you’re looking to have a good time, not extra worry or problems to come your way. You want to take in the sights, food and entertainment the area has to offer. There are certain things you should know and think about before going on your trip in order to make yourself more street smart and as result your visit safer, especially if you are traveling alone.

First of all, avoid looking like a tourist a much as possible. Don’t walk around with a map looking lost. Study the map before going out and when on the street, use a small guidebook for direction instead. Ask the concierge at your hotel to recommend any areas to steer clear of or avoid. Additionally, dress yourself down when going out and don’t wear flashy jewelry or watches that attract attention. Thieves are looking for an easy target and you don’t want to be that target. If you need help with directions, look for a family or mother with children to ask.

Another tip is to be extra cautious when getting on/off of a subway, train, bus or escalator because pickpockets hit people here the most. Keep your purse (or other valuables) away from the street side when walking and when riding an escalator, keep it away from the opposite side so it isn’t easy for someone to grab and take off with. Don’t carry all your credit cards and IDs with you constantly. Take one credit card with you and photocopies of any important documents, not the originals. Be careful with your money. Don’t ever take out a bid wad of bills when you’re purchasing something. Have the bills divided up so you don’t expose it all at once. Also, have tips ready for doormen or porters beforehand so you don’t have to go digging around in your wallet. If you are ever attacked, make as much noise as possible  run, fight and yell loudly!

With a little knowledge and extra precaution you can have more street smarts and be a safer during your travels.

Being A Smarter & Safer Traveler

It’s so exciting to pack your bags and get away from normal life for awhile! However, there are many safety issues to consider when you are travelling. You need to be smart and take some precautions so that you can be safer during your trip especially if you happen to be travelling alone.

As far as your luggage is concerned, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself. First of all, put a lock on all your suitcases. Also, if you have had fun shopping while on your vacation and have bought a lot of items to take home with you, you might want to secure your bag with some strong tape as well. Make sure to stay close to your valuables as you go through airport security and keep your carry-on bag safe in public areas of the airport by putting your foot through the strap when it is on the floor.

Also, if you are flying overnight, make sure to keep an eye on your belongings at all times. Put you valuables in something you can wear while sleeping, like a waist pack instead of putting it in a stowed carry on bag. Also, if you have to go to the bathroom, don’t leave your purse, backpack, or any valuables behind take them with you (unless you have a trusted partner or friend that will be there to watch them).

Another smart travel tips to think about is tearing the name and address labels off of any magazines you take with you to read, in case you happen to leave one behind somewhere. That way you won’t be announcing to everyone and anyone that you are away from home right now.

In regards to your destination, one tip is that you can talk to the flight attendants or other passengers or about their thoughts on the safety of the place you are going to and whether they have been there or have any concerns to share. It gives you a good idea of what to expect when you get off the plane.

In most all public setting, the rules for safety vary according to each different place and situation. Depending on what is going on and the environment surrounding it, safety rules and regulations may change in requirements. What may be acceptable and viable in one situation may change in another situation. Public facilities have general safety measures that they use to operate their business and to ensure safety for their customers and their business. However, even though rules may vary from one setting to another, there are some general rules that you can follow to ensure safety in most any situation. They are:

Self Protection

Always protect yourself and those with you by observing the rules that are applicable to the public place that you’re attending. It most public places, there is an understood inference that you take responsibility for your own actions and the actions of those with you. For instance, in restaurants, parents are responsible for keeping their children under control and making sure that they don’t cause any problems. You can ensure self-protection by making sure the kids understand that they shouldn’t run and play in a sit-down restaurant or stick their foot out as the waiter walks by.

Public Pools

Probably one of the most popular places for the general public to be, it is not void of its own set of rules and regulations governing this type of water entertainment. Always ensure that there is a life-guard on duty for whatever pool you may be attending. If there isn’t a lifeguard on duty, be sure that you and those with you are good swimmers and know basic pool safety rules. It also helps to understand physical safety measures like resuscitation and water danger signs in case it becomes necessary.

Always observe signs around you, and make sure to notice anything out of the ordinary or different in any situation that will help you understand how the place works and what is expected from you while you’re in that particular environment.
