<p>A recent study by US researchers has found that older adults who  adopted a healthy diet were more likely to live longer than those who  did not. In a study of 2,500 Americans between the ages of 70 and 79  over a ten year period will report these findings in the January 2011  issue of Journal of the American Dietetic Association.</p>
<p>Healthy Diet Make for a Longer Life<br />
According to the study&#8217;s findings, older adults who maintain a diet of  mostly fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and  little beef had a higher-quality and longer life than their counterparts  who had higher intakes of fat and sugar. There are not many studies  that have focused on dietary patterns and longevity in the elderly.  Since the leading causes of death are shifting to chronic diseases which  can be affected by diet, more research is looking at diet. In addition  to this change, the world population is also aging. The worldwide  population of adults over 65 is expected to reach 973 million in 2030,  more than double the same population in 2000.</p>
<p>Saturated Fats and Trans Fats Lead to Higher Mortality<br />
The study divided the research participants into six groups based on  what they ate most. After taking various demographics of the  participants into account, research showed that participants categorized  under the high-fat dairy foods group and the sweets and desserts group  had mortality rates 40 percent and 37 percent, respectively, higher than  the healthy foods group. Both of these food group with higher mortality  rates are higher in saturated fats and trans fats than the healthy  foods group.</p>
<p>The project was led by Dr. Amy Anderson and Dr. Nadine Sahyoun, both  from the University of Maryland&#8217;s Department of Nutrition and Food  Science. Grants from the National Institute of Health and National  Institute of Aging helped support this research.</p>

<p>The term public health refers to ongoing science that helps  prevent disease and prolong a healthy life. Public health actively  monitors each community for threats that may affect the health of the  general population. Other important fields include bio-statistics (the study of  biology and statistics), epidemiology (studies the patterns of illness  and health within the population), and occupational health to protect  the health and safety of all employees.</p>
<p>Public health focuses on disease prevention with a careful surveillance  of documented cases, while promoting healthful lifestyles and behaviors.  With the intervention provided by public health, widespread disease can  be prevented. Some simple ways to prevent disease include proper hand  washing and required vaccinations. Public health officials suggest that  single adults who are sexually active consider the use of condoms to  prevent the spread of sexually transmitted disease (STD). Public health  was put in place to improve the quality of life by effectively  preventing and treating spreadable disease. A healthy population is free  of disease, and has proper social and mental well-being.</p>
<p>There are other important concerns for public health. Public health  offers safe driving tips for aging drivers, information on family  fitness programs for an active lifestyle, and resources that doctors can  use to help their patients stop smoking. Alcohol screening and  intervention is available for patients who suffer from alcoholism, and  there are online resources to provide counseling to victims and family  members who are living with domestic violence. Substance abuse is a  major public health issue. Substance abuse programs are offered for  those who are addicted to habit forming drugs such as prescription  medications, medical marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines.  Left unchecked, these public health issues can spread throughout the  community.</p>

These public health studies are used to help  scientists examine how surroundings can affect our physical and mental  health.</p>
<p>Those who work in public health search for ways to prevent disease  within the community by conducting research, developing policies and  educational programs that identify and prevent recurring disease or  injuries, and implementing communty services for health care. The  primary focus of public health officials is to prevent illness and  disease from destroying entire areas. They look for ways to stop disease  and sickness before it happens. Public health studies on preventive  care targets the wellness and treatment of the population as a whole.  These public health studies are conducted in communities all across the  nation.</p>

<p>When you are seriously ill or have a condition that requires  consistent maintenance month after month, it is common to take  prescription medication as part of your treatment. Medication isn&#8217;t just  for when you are sick; it can also help ease the symptoms of permanent  conditions such as nerve damage. Many emotional and hormonal conditions  such as depression also have medications associated with them. If you  have a condition that is uncomfortable or painful for you, more than  likely there is a medication that can relieve your pain and help make  life more comfortable.</p>
<p>Prescription medication must be prescribed by your doctor; it cannot  be bought “over the counter” at a store, as prescription drugs are often  stronger and more likely to be misused than over the counter drugs.  Instead, you must take your prescription to a pharmacist, who will fill  the order for you&#8211;quite literally, in the case of pills, filling a  bottle with the exact number of pills that your prescription lists. <a href="http://www.prescriptiondrugs.com/">Prescription medication</a> can also be in liquid form to be taken orally or by injection (as in  the case of insulin for diabetics) or, in rarer cases, powdered to mix  into drinks or dissolve onto the tongue, as is often the case with  elderly patients.</p>

To use your prescription medication safely, always tell  your doctor and pharmacist about any other drugs you may be taking, even  over the counter ones. Mixing some kinds of prescription drugs can  cause dangerous side effects; your pharmacist will tell you if any of  yours are dangerous to take in tandem. Always read all instructions  given by your doctor about how much and how often to take your  prescription medication, and never take prescription drugs that were not  prescribed specifically to you.</p>

<p>The common cold is perhaps one of the most annoying illnesses there is, simply because it&#8217;s not life-threatening, yet it can linger on and on for weeks and make the person suffer and totally miserable. There is also no cure for the common cold which makes it even more annoying since the person has to simply &#8220;wait it out&#8221; and make the best of an uncomfortable situation.</p>
<p>The cold is also not necessarily a seasonal illness, since there are summer colds and winter colds, but the symptoms that accompany the cold can make it feel much worse sometimes than it really is. With the aches, pains, fever and congestion that often accompany the cold, finding cures or remedies is likely going to be at the top of the person&#8217;s list.</p>
<p>So since there is no cure for the common cold, what are some things that a person can do to avoid catching such an annoying illness? There are several things that a person can do on a daily basis to help, but here are 3 key things that a person can do to avoid the illness. They are:</p>
<p>- Wash your hands often. After physical contact with infected persons, doorknobs or any surface where there is a lot of human traffic.</p>
<p>- Drink water, eat healthily and get plenty of rest. This gives your body the defense it needs in order to fight off the germs that infest the body with the cold virus.</p>
<p>- Spray surfaces with disinfectant in all season and off-season months. This will kill germs quickly and retard their growth.</p>
<p>Living with the common cold can be as short as a week or as long as a month. This can vary from person to person, their environment and their environment. By following the 3 simple steps above, you can significantly decrease your exposure to germs and the likelihood of catching that dreaded cold.</p>

<p>Public health is a topic that gets a lot of media attention, especially when there is an outbreak of some kind that threatens the overall health and safety of the general population and local communities. There are many types of illness outbreaks that are adequately contained immediately that never becomes public knowledge or that people are made aware of. Most times, this is effective, and sometimes it&#8217;s not so effective. When there is an illness that gets out of control and beyond containment, the public has to be made aware of it and what steps to take to avoid further problems.</p>
<p>For the average person who interacts on a daily basis in any public situation, there are things that they can do that will help them avoid certain illnesses and being exposed to anything that can be potentially harmful to their health. This is especially important if the person has a low immune system and is susceptible to catch just about anything that is airborne. This is also true for small babies and the elderly whose immune systems are somewhat weakened, making them liable to catch most anything as well.</p>
<p>- Avoid touching high traffic surfaces like doorknobs, toilet handles and seats and places where there is a lot of hand contact. This is how many germs and bacteria are transferred.</p>
<p>- Cover your mouth and nose in high traffic places, if possible, to reduce your exposure to germs. This includes sports events, medical facilities and even shopping malls. Although this can seem like a put-off for many people, try to be as discreet as possible without offending.</p>
<p>Practicing and using routines that will protect you from contracting illnesses that are common in the public can keep you safe and protected. Certain routines and habits will also help you transfer those over to any situation and implement them whenever health issues are at risk.</p>

<p>Our state of health is determined not only by what we eat or drink, but also by how much sleep and rest our bodies get. Studies have shown that people who get seven or more hours of sleep each night are also more likely to not be overweight, stressed or have any other physical ailments that wreak havoc on their bodies.</p>
<p>Many people underestimate the power of a good night&#8217;s sleep and think that they can get by with very little, sometimes trying to subsist off of two, three or even four hours at a time. What usually results is a shortened attention span, nervous energy, the inability to focus and making physical mistakes that can potentially be quite harmful.</p>
<p>Proper rest is also the key to an overall state of health since adequate rest helps to equip our bodies with the energy it needs to fight off anything from the common cold to some types of diseases. So how can you get more sleep to get the most benefits?</p>
<p>- Have a set time to retire for the evening. No matter what&#8217;s going on, get up and go to bed at the designated time. This gets your body in the habit of sleeping at a certain time and trained to resting at will.</p>
<p>- Take power naps throughout the day, if possible. This can super-charge you for anything else that the day may hold and give you a huge boost of natural energy.</p>
<p>- Don&#8217;t do anything stimulating before bedtime, like exercising or drinking caffeine. This can keep your body wired too much to wind down and prepare to go to sleep.</p>
<p>With the proper rest and a good night&#8217;s sleep every night, a person has the ability to achieve more and to be more productive. Without it, they are faced with many disadvantages that in the end prove to not be worth the time that they cut into their rest.</p>

<p>Everybody’s heard about social drinking. There is a population out there that advocates having an alcoholic drink or two in social gatherings to maintain that perfect balance. If trends are anything to go by, social smoking could soon be a common phenomenon. As the term implies, social smokers light up only occasionally in a gathering or an event.</p>
<p>The reasoning is that a few cigarettes a week are definitely less harmful than a whole pack or packs every day. While this may seem consistent, there are many compelling reasons why social smoking cannot be dismissed as another harmless practice. The first reason is that the definition of social smoking is subject to a whole range of interpretations; it could mean one cigarette or several packs at one go.</p>
<p>The possibility of social smoking developing into a full-blown habit cannot be ruled out either. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it&#8217;s estimated that 46 million Americans smoke and 70% of them want to stop. Moreover, the human body is not built for smoking tobacco, period. Even one cigarette leaves an imprint on body chemistry and arterial walls. Occasional smoking may not put your chances of getting cancer on par with a serious smoker, but it will definitely be higher than a non-smoker’s.</p>
<p>A worrying fact is that most social smokers are young, and are the targets of marketing campaigns by tobacco companies who don’t want to lose out on this segment. The Anti-Tobacco Bill aims to protect this vulnerable chunk of the population from such campaigns that can increase tobacco usage.</p>
<p>Electronic cigarettes are a good choice if you’re not ready to kick the habit just yet. Apart from being available in a variety of flavors, it also offers the benefits of being tar free. <p>Diets that are low in fat and higher in proteins and vegetables quickly reward the body with renewed energy and a brighter, clearer skin complexion. This is why people who are on a diet to lose weight are encouraged to eat more vegetables and drink more water to essentially &#8220;flush&#8221; the toxins from their bodies.</p>
<p>By incorporating healthy habits into your lifestyle, you can develop routines that lean towards good eating and living and that will show up in your physical health. Although it won&#8217;t be a magical, with some consistency, it can become a routine part of your life. In time, you&#8217;ll certainly be glad that you passed up that burger-and-fry temptation in favor of good, hearty vegetables!</p>

<p>While you&#8217;re out having fun and drinking alcohol remember to be smart  about it. If you consume too much alcohol, you can lose control and end  up wrecking not only your night, but most likely all the people&#8217;s  nights around you as well! Additionally, you could also find yourself in  a bad situation you wouldn&#8217;t normally be in if you weren&#8217;t  intoxicated. There are ways to drink safely and tips you can use to  protect both your body and your mind and be smart!</p>
<p>To calculate the amount of alcohol a person consumes, the quantity is  measured in units. Some examples of drinks and how many units they are  as follows: a small 125 ml glass of wine, a half pint of beer or a  single measure of rum, whisky, gin or vodka is equal to 1.5 units of  alcohol.</p>
<p>So, now you might be asking yourself how many units of alcohol is  considered to be the recommended amount then in order to practice safe  drinking while having a fun night out? Actually, it&#8217;s interesting to  find out that there are different recommendations depending on your  gender for what is considered acceptable amounts. A male&#8217;s body makeup  has 66 percent fluid while in comparison with a female&#8217;s body that  only has 55 percent which means that the alcohol will be more diluted in  a male than in a female. Therefore, if a man and woman consume the same  amount of alcohol, the woman will typically get drunk a lot faster than  the man would. And that&#8217;s something all women should have knowledge of  and be careful about.</p>
<p>As a general rule, health experts have determined that men should drink  no more than 3 &#8211; 4 units during a 24 hr period. For an example of what  that equals, a guy shouldn&#8217;t consume more than three glasses of wine  or two pints of beer per day. For women, it has been determined that  they shouldn&#8217;t have more than 2 &#8211; 3 units for a day  which means not  more than one pint of beer or 2 glasses of wine per day.</p>

<p>Influenza (or the flu as it is more commonly known) is definitely  something that no one wants to get or experience. It can make you feel  extremely awful for days on end and be accompanied with some very  unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, a cough, sore throat,  fever, chills, stuffy / runny nose, headache, as well as fatigue. The  flu season tends to hit a peak in January and February, but it actually  starts anywhere from October and lasts as late as May in some areas,  which means over 6 months during the year. But you shouldn&#8217;t wait  until peak season to get a flu shot &#8212; you should do it as soon as you  can!</p>
<p>Unfortunately, flu viruses change and mutate every year. That means that  even if you have gotten the flu before, you can get it again. In order  to decrease the amount of flu outbreaks and make it not so widespread in  the U.S., the federal advisory committee encourages and recommends  everyone ages 6 months and older should become vaccinated. It is  especially important to make sure to get a flu shot if you fall in any  of the categories that are at high risk of having flu complications.  These are as follows: a child between ages 2 &#8211; 5, person over 50 years  old, have a chronic illness or condition (such as diabetes, heart  disease, asthma), or pregnant woman. Only those that are allergic to  chicken eggs or have had a severe reaction from a flu shot should talk  to a doctor before getting the shot. Also, if your child is under 6  months old or has a fever, you should talk to your doctor about it.</p>
<p>The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers 90  percent of the general public eligible to receive the flu vaccine and  has reported that the flu has caused about 36,000 deaths and about  200,000 hospitalizations per year. <p>Staying safe during your night out on the town will make your outing  even more enjoyable and memorable. In the previous article there were  some simple tips given to help you be safer while you live it up on your  night out. Remember to always use the buddy system, don&#8217;t accept  drinks from strangers or leave your personal items unattended for any  amount of time. Here are some more tips that you can use to help keep  you out of harm&#8217;s way.</p>
<p>One important thing is that you should know what your personal alcohol  intake limit is. According to the study done by Inside Edition, 56  percent of women surveyed said that they consumed more alcohol then they  should have and couldn&#8217;t remember some of their night out. Your  alertness decreases with any amount of alcohol. So you need to know your  limit &#8212; when enough is enough &#8212; so that you can keep your wits about  you and not make bad choices. A guy looking for an easy target will  notice if you&#8217;ve had too much to drink and will take advantage of that  any chance he gets.</p>
<p>Also, you may not want to hear it, but you need to carefully choose what  to wear. If you dress in something too reveling or too sexy when you go  out for the night it sends a certain message about you &#8211; basically,  you are easy. It draws attention, but not in the way you want it to.  Most likely you will attract someone who is just looking for sex and  quite possibly the wrong person who is only looking for their next  victim. Don&#8217;t take that chance. You can look good and attractive  without bearing your chest or bottom and will keep yourself much safer  as a result.</p>
<p>Lastly, be in tune with your instincts and trust them. If you feel that  something or doesn&#8217;t feel right, get yourself away as soon as humanly  possible. Don&#8217;t worry about being rude. You need to think about  keeping yourself safe and as the old saying goes, it&#8217;s much better to  be safe then sorry!</p>

<p>There is no particular time of the year when it&#8217;s the best time to get a  cold. A person can catch a cold during any season of the year, even  summertime, so safety precautions are good to practice all year and all  seasons to avoid the unpleasant illness. There are however a couple of  seasons of the year when the odds of catching a cold are significantly  increased and a persons chance of getting sick are higher. Fall and  winter are considered the prime target seasons for catching a cold for  the majority of people, especially in crowded, public areas like the  workplace, school, church and even the local grocery store.</p>
<p>One  thing that people can do to avoid catching colds during the prime cold  season is to cover up when and where appropriate. They should avoid  going outside in extremely cold weather without a covering of some sort,  whether it&#8217;s a coat or a jacket. There is moisture in cold weather, and  when that moisture is on the body for long periods of time, it  compromises the person&#8217;s immune system and makes them more susceptible  to germs and colds.</p>
<p>Also, to avoid catching colds and staying  healthy, a person should wash their hands as often as possible. Use hand  sanitizer if soap and water are not available and avoid touching  surfaces that are frequently touched by the general population. This  includes doorknobs, tables and even money. Although handling these  things are sometimes unavoidable, be mindful of touching them and avoid  touching your eyes, nose or mouth after you&#8217;ve been exposed to those  things. Frequent hand washing clears away germs and bacteria, things  that are present and contribute to a person catching a cold.</p>
<p>Finally, drinking plenty of fluids during cold season keeps the body  flushed and hydrated and the cold germs at bay. The best liquid to drink  of course would be water, but any kind of liquid is good so long as it  is frequent and in abundance. Orange juice, sports drinks and even  coffee and tea are good liquids to drink and helps a person avoid  sicknesses.</p>

Instead of heading to the doctor&#8217;s office each time cold  symptoms begin to manifest, there are other remedies that you can take  to relieve symptoms and to make the cold virtually disappear.</p>
<p>- Vitamin C</p>
<p>Begin taking doses of Vitamin C immediately after you get cold symptoms.  This can be in the form of Vitamin C tablets or by drinking glasses of  orange juice. Vitamin C can help strengthen the body&#8217;s immune system and  lessen the degree of the cold-like symptoms.</p>
<p>- Increase Meals</p>
<p>Eating more and drinking more fluids (especially warm fluids) also help  to strengthen the body&#8217;s immune system. Food also speeds up the body&#8217;s  metabolism and increases energy so that bodily functions are  accelerated, including the body eliminating bacteria and toxins that can  be connected to the cold.</p>
<p>- Rest</p>
<p>Not necessarily anything surprising about this one, but rest is perhaps  one of the most important things you can do to remedy a cold. The body  repairs itself when it is at rest, therefore properly resting when you  have a cold is the way to help decrease the symptoms and recuperate  faster.</p>
<p>- Avoiding Germs</p>
<p>Washing your hands even AFTER you&#8217;ve gotten a cold willl still help many  of your cold syptoms and keep the cold from getting any worse. Although  you may not be able to completely avoid germs, you can decrease your  exposure to them and lessen their affect on you by observing basic  handwashing practices.</p>

<p>Playing sports is probably one of the best forms of exercise that people  engage in for fun, weight loss or as something they may do  competitively. Sports requires a lot of energy and focus, especially if  it is a team sport like football or basketball. Engaging in various  sport activities also demands periods of endurance to be successful like  running, swimming or skiing. As in most any sports-natured situation,  safety procedures should be observed to keep the person safe, in good  health and enjoyable. Here are a few sports tips to ensure that safety  procedures are always practiced:</p>
<p>Pre-Conditioning</p>
<p>-  Always pre-condition your body before engaging in sports. This is very  important for team sports and also for solo sports. Pre-conditioning  keeps the body strong and helps to avoid injuries from occuring. Include  things like strength-training, lifting weights and brisk walks or runs  to build the body&#8217;s endurance and stamina. This will give your body the  endurance it needs to safely engage in the sport.</p>
<p>Proper Hydration</p>
<p>- Practicing sports safety also includes properly hydrating the body in  order to have the stamina and endurance to engage in any sport.  Hydrating can be done through adequate water intake or any sports drinks  that balances sodium and electrolytes in the body. Keeping hydrated  also helps the sports player to perform better and slowly raises their  performance level.</p>
<p>Adequate Equipment</p>
<p>- Part of  sports safety also includes having and using the proper equipment for  the job. This will include things like football pads, baseball safety  helmets, quality running shoes or safety swimming googles. The right  sports equipment can fully protect a persons body during the sports  activity and it&#8217;s important to have quality equipment to ensure complete  safety.</p>
<p>Safety procedures don&#8217;t always have to involve  anything too complicated, but sometimes only neccesitates using good  judgement and practical applications. Observing good sports safety  procedures can keep the player safe and greatly increase his odds at  enjoying the sport for as long as possible.</p>

<p>Staying healthy and practicing a good healthy lifestyle is very  important for a person who wants to pursue longevity and a quality life.  A healthy lifestyle incorporates a lot of components that factor into  making health a bigger picture than what is readily viewable. Health is  more than what a person eats or drinks, but is also a mindset and a  healthy, positive attitude about life.</p>
<p>Staying healthy is a lifelong pursuit and requires a focused mindset to  ensure that it happens. Here a few tips and general guidelines for those  who wish to find healthier ways to live and incorporate them into their  long-term daily living:</p>
<p>1.) Take vitamins and supplements daily. Many times the foods we eat do  not have the sufficient vitamins and nutrients that the body needs for  sustained health. For that reason, taking vitamins becomes a necessity,  especially if a person doesn&#8217;t have access to fresh fruits, vegetables  and clean water. Although they are a supplement, they are not to be  used in the place of good eating, but only to help the body.</p>
<p>2.) Drink water frequently. Toxins and fatty acids are carried away from  the body through our urine and drinking sufficient water helps the body  to achieve that goal. Water is filtered by the kidneys and passes  through the elimination system in the body. Drinking water also helps  the skin to stay soft and supple and keeps you from dehydrating.</p>
<p>3.) Eat two to four servings of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.  Eating these things as a complement to your meal or even as a main meal  gives the body more sustained energy and stamina than other quick fix  foods like dense sugar foods, high calorie sodas and fast foods. Also,  cooking food from homemade is another way to ensure that your body gets  all of the vitamins and nutrients that it needs from food.</p>
<p>4.) Exercise frequently. The average adult should exercise for twenty to  forty minutes at least three to four times a week as a way to maintain a  healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle. Cardiovascular exercises  (walking, running and swimming) as well as strength training and  weight-lifting all enhance a person&#8217;s physique as well as promote  muscle growth and gives them the sustained energy they need to perform  basic to moderate jobs on a daily basis.</p>

<p>A person&#8217;s weight is a key factor in determining correct dosages. Although there are some medications that are dual-purpose  (they can treat two illnesses), more often, one medication type  corresponds to one type of illness. <p>Corporate America is not the first place that you would think of when  trying to implement regulations that help to hazardous situations. Many  small situations occur in the office work environment that get taken for  granted. Minor burns, cuts, scrapes and accidents can occur quickly and  without warning in many cases because people may not know what to watch  out for and help to avoid.</p>
<p>Safety in the workplace is usually a concept that doesn&#8217;t get much  attention, unless there are hazardous work conditions, like a  construction or a chemical environment. For these situations, there are  boundless rules and regulations that apply to keep the employee safe and  avoid accidents.
