VPC is coordinating a collaboration of individuals, groups, businesses and public and private sector agencies statewide to implement a unified approach to violence prevention in Hawaii. Members of the collaboration know that it will take all of us working together closely to stem the tide of violence in Hawaii. Together we believe we can act now before Hawaii’s families, schools, work places and communities are faced with the magnitude of violence already rampant in other communities across the United States. The Unified Approach to Violence Prevention in Hawaii, built and implemented by individuals, groups and public and private sector organizations, is coordinated through VPC’s volunteer Executive Director and Board President, in partnership with the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women (HSCSW) as its fiscal services sponsor, and funded through the Department of Health (DOH). The infrastructure priorities of the 5-YEAR PLAN set the course for VPC to explore 501 (c) (3) opportunities and seek a steady revenue source. Our March 2000 meeting culminated in success with 45 participants representing a diverse range of individuals, groups and public and private sector agencies agreeing there is a need for a unified approach and committing to work toward this goal. The group acknowledged the work to address specific types of violence needs to continue and we need to develop a unified approach to prevent all types of violence. Together we identified the need to seek common ground as partners to achieve more effective results. All present made a firm commitment to develop a unified approach to violence prevention in Hawaii. We unanimously voiced the belief that neighbor island inclusion, input and participation is critical to a statewide effort; and approaches developed by each county are respected and supported as well. We identified the next steps as follows:
The 2001 Strategic Planning Retreat resulted in the identification of priorities and selection of a Steering Committee for the Unified Approach to Violence Prevention in Hawaii. A FIVE-YEAR PLAN outlining priorities and time-framed objectives for a unified approach to violence prevention in Hawaii was unanimously adopted in September 2001.
